One point about credit applications: the address you give has to be EXACTLY the same as the address on the Post Office Address File - even if it's wrong, as mine is.

I found this out when my wife applied for a current account (giving what we consider to be the correct version of our address) and was refused. The local Nationwide branch (for it was they) was very helpful and it was them who came up with the cause of the problem i.e. the discrepancy in the address.

So now, we make applications using the correct, wrong address, and once successful, do a change-of-address to the wrong, correct address. If you see what I mean.

Not always so - my property is not listed as separate flats on the postcode database but is on the electoral role database. I use the address as it appears on the elctoral role.

Checking your report leaves a "soft" search which creditors can't see and doesn't affect your rating.

Most of the time, when you select "Mastercard" and enter Maestro details it goes through as Maestro is part of the mastercard network. If not, then Solo / Switch if either are an option.

Well OK, it has to match to the premises, but if it doesn't then forget it (the street name is wrong in my case, even the postie can't grasp it and sometimes delivers my mail to the wrong street; trying to get it fixed is possibly the most Kafkaesque experience I have ever had, and I gave up years ago).

  • Hmm i just tried to sign up to Equifax and i have to send them documents because apparently there are a "large number of credit agreements" in my name - that is why it looked like my credit card was getting rejected when it wasn't.

    Now i am very worried.

Presumably you are worried about identity theft. If so, don't be: pretty much anything an identity thief does will result in a loss to some bank, not to you. The worst that can happen to you is a heap of hassle.

But do get hold of your credit report a.s.a.p. so that you find out the worst and can start fixing it.

  • Thanks to all who replied - will start trying to sort out the mess as soon as Equifax have enabled my account :-)

It shouldn't take long, you can photograph or scan in the documents and attach them to a ticket under the dispute resolution.

They can walk you through this if you call them

  • Interesting, i got my credit report through, and there is nothing there, no credit agreements or anything. Do mobile phone contracts count? As i say i have an old student credit card that i got in about 2002 that i still use, but that does not come up either....can anybody think of a reason for that?

    Cheers

Yes, Mobile contracts count. It still is effectively credit.
Have you used that card in the past X years?? Maybe the company cancelled it some time ago?

This would explain the problem. There's an address mismatch.

I assume all of your current creditors have your current address?
If the address is not listed verbatim on the postcode database, you may need to get some advice from Equifax to help rectify the problem. Can you see your electoral role registration?

Call your local authority and ask them to tell you your address on the ER 100% VERBATIM, this is the address, the same in every detail, even if it's wrong, that your creditors should have.

  • Hmm....well the card i use all the time, and the bill gets sent to my home address, so i dont know why that is not on there. As for the phone, i signed up for the contract a year ago, when i was at my previous address, this previous address is on my credit report (admittedly the address on the report is different to the address i used to use when signing up for things), but i have since then moved and changed to the address for my contract anyway, i get my phone bill to my current address.....

Also shouldnt student loan be there? I might have to phone up equifax :-)
