Is there one website you wish existed?

We're just brainstorming here and thought we'd expand the number of brains involved (as there's only two of us!) :D

We develop custom websites and web applications for small businesses and are considering maybe developing some web based applications of our own.

If there is one website/application that you wish existed that would make your life easier/better/more efficient what would it be?

I would like a website that sells cash half price. I think it would be very popular.
  • I'm sure I've had unsolicited emails from sites that offered to do just that - All I needed to do was send them my bank details.... ;)

But would you truly be happy?

    Don't answer that!

An online staff rota system would be good. I worked for a company that was tech based and they built their own and it is so good to be able to check and book shifts from anywhere, backed up with SMS alerts. There was also a messaging system so when staff logged on they would have to read the latest company information.

The ability to add key dates and have reminders would be important, and a holiday request and approval system would be good.

At the last business I managed I kludged together something using Yahoo services. Maybe something exists now, I don't need one at the moment so haven't looked into it. I will need one in a while though and personally wouldn't mind a small monthly hosting fee if the system was of a high standard.

Thanks paulwf, I'll take a look at what's around. I know by looking for myself at productivity software that there's often a lot of different solutions around but never one that does exactly what you want.
  • Something lke google maps for planning a journey but that takes into account hills as well as distance and (maybe traffic lights and a load of other factors) and calculates the journey that should cost the least in petrol rather than just the shortest/quickest. This would be good for the environment and the pocket.

How about a site for people to give Christmas tips to their binmen and postmen like Just Giving but set up for the Council/ RoyalMail so you enter your postcode and make a donation. I think a lot of people would like to tip at Christmas but might be in work themselves and not get to see them?

I like the rota idea below

  • I remember hearing about some sat-nav system in the U.S. that relayed anonymous data about your movement back to base so your system could see how traffic was moving on the roads it planned to use in real time. I think the problem was it depended on a certain number of these sat-navs being sold, the fewer there were the less traffic information there was available.

I think multimap gives you a carbon footprint for a journey but whether that's just based on mileage or if they take speed into account I don't know.

I think some of the flashier satnavs do see what the traffic's like and alter your route accordingly, don't they? Or am I missing something?

I don't want it web-based, because the person in question doesn't have a computer, but something which displayed answerphone messages on a screen would be good, for those whose hearing loss is such that they can't hear what's said on the answerphone!
