aggh - going through a spotty phase! Help!

Hi - Wondering if anyone has any ideas! Don't normally suffer from majorly spotty skin (at least, not since teen years), but since new year seem to have been suffering from breakouts of spots! Anyone got any suggestions? Even BF pointed out to me last night that my skins looking a bit teenagery, so not best pleased!

I can't think of anything I've done recently that might have caused it...

I've been coming out in spots recently and I've put it down to the central heating. My skin is really dry at the moment too and I usually have 'normal' skin.

Try not to touch your face either - which I know is difficult when you're so aware of your spotty face!

What other things have you tried? (so others won't waste their time).

Maybe you should. I'm sure it would help.
  • First, ascertain whether your skin is getting greasier or dryer than usual - and try to correct that.
A different moisturiser or cleansing process might help. Have you changed your hairstyle? My DD gets very spotty forehead since she started to wear a heavy fringe! Or it could be being in centrally heated rooms a lot/out in the cold a lot? Of course look at diet & fluid intake too.

As I said it will depend where the spots are & the condition of your skin generally. With me its usually excess oiliness, so I cleanse carefully and don't over moisturise those areas. I use aloe vera gel on individual spots over night, that seems to clear them up more quickly than Clearasil etc.

Hope you an get it sorted.
  • I've had to take steriods recently for an illness, and it has made me break out in lots of spots, but generally I have quite spotty skin, I look on the plus side though, I have teenage skin, but am 29, so not a wrinkle in sight yet!

There we have it brokeinwales, you are taking steroids! Why didn't you mention that before?

Stop taking steroids and the spots will go away!

    You're welcome!

have you been eating a food that you dont usually eat.
Reason I am asking is if I eat chocolate biscuits I get bad skin, other biscuits are fine but noticed as soon as I had one choc biscuit next day bad skin, maybe keep a food diary and see if you can figure out which food might be triggering it..

  • OK - thanks for the sensible advice. (Could be on to something with the central heating/ weather - although not sure what to do about that!)

My diet is pretty much the best of anyone I know - I rarely touch processed food or refined carbs, eat loads of fruit and veg, wholegrains and pulses, drink loads of water, don't really drink alcohol of caffeine much , none of this has changed recently - so I don't see how diet can possibly be related.

I do wear make up, but not a lot, and not every day.

I clean my face with plain unperfumed soap and water, morning and night and exfoliate with a scrub a couple of times a week. My skin is normally on the dry side of normal - the skin on my body is very sensitive and flares up a lot, but my facial skin isn't usually quite so bad. I use a little oil-free Nivea moisturiser n the mornings. I've tried using tea tree oil and witch hazel on the spots, but they just make things worse (go from a bit red and sore to very red and sore!). Tried a mud face mask but didn't make a lot of difference.

I'm on the pill (Yasmin) and have been since 2003.

I take Omega 3 and vitamin D supplements. thought about taking some zinc cos I heard that's good for skin?

BF mentioned could be something to do with sweating after exercise - but I've been exercising regularly for years and never had a problem?

No change of hairstyle. No othe recent changes I can think of. Not under any more stress than normal particularly (in fact compared to some of the stress I had last year - relationship breakup, finance problems, moving house etc, I'm positively serene!)

As I said, skin normally normal, tending to dryness - overall oiliness doesn't seem to have changed that much. Spots mainly seem to be on lower half of my face though chin, jaw and upper lip - nothing above the nose.

Spots around the jawline are normally hormone related, also lay off the dairy, my number one tip for getting rid of spots is Freederm Gel applied twice daily until the spots have gone and then as needed, two sizes available from Boots costing either £5 or £10, nothing works like it:)
