Where to get a router?

Morning all!

I've got broadband only with virgin media and usually just connect my computer to the modem. However, i've just bought a laptop with wifi and want to use the laptop wirelessly - just in my house.

I've never had wireless before so i'm not sure - do i have to phone Virgin and ask them to send me a router? and if so, should i pay for it?

Or do i just go out and buy one from a shop.

Would be grateful for any advice.

thanks

Either, the advantage of getting one from Virgin is that they can offer you some support. You may be able to get a free one, if you agree to a new contract.
Alternatively you could pick one up at the supermarket. Make sure that you by a cable router ( as opposed to an ADSL Modem/Router.)

Why should it be a cable router, rather than an ADSL one? I'm just curious. i know nothing about these things.

Because the signals are different. Your box decodes the signal and then has a USB and Ethernet connector :)

OK just to be sure are you on Virgin Cable for your broadband, or Virgin national ADSL (down your telephone line)?

Good then I refer you back to my previous post.
You need a cable router. This plugs into your existing modem via an Ethernet lead, The wireless router will provide you with 4 Ethernet ports and a wireless interface.

I have my Virgin wireless router Netgear
WGR614 for cable connections which have not used. It is still in it's original packaging, you can have it for £25 delivered posted 1st class recorded, send me a private message.
  • The reason I ask is that virgin track the MAC address of the accessing PC, and when I have used a Linksys wireless router.

Ask Virgin for a wireless router for free or you'll leave. Or £30 and you'll buy one http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/6758882.htm

    And make sure you leave.
  • I agree with others - Haggle with virgin for a wifi router
