When is it time to sell a car?

Our Mondeo (1.8 Verona) is nine years old, has 95,000 on the clock, and the engine and gearbox are very sweet. The bodywork and interior are immaculate, and we have just had a full exhaust system fitted, plus new tyres all around. Although we have had coil springs, drop links and a CV joint fitted in the last year, these are all "wear and tear" items, and would apply to any car. Now we have to have a CV joint fitted on the other side (no surprise really, given the state of the roads), and the missus (who drives the car mostly), says that we should sell it.
I have been on the Mondeo forum, and there is no reason why this car should not do another 95K easily.
I like the car, because although not exciting, it does everything you ask of it rather well. It is a good motorway cruiser (South of France and Italy no problem), very comfortable and is quiet, and economical (500 miles on a £55 tankful).
So, when is the "right" time to sell a car?

  • Well, most people I come across seem to sell a car once they have spent loads on it. Which is just nuts!

It'll be a great car for the next owner and you'll be back to square one with your next car. Buying an unknown quantity.

I'd personally keep it. Or sell it me :)

    I'd buy it off you!

To me, the time to sell a car is when it costs more than £150 to get through the MOT (my most expensive ever car cost £275)

Your mundano has heaps of life left yet - why sell it when you've just replaced most of the bits which wear out???

That doesn't take a lot nowdays, brakes and silencer and you will be well over that figure.
  • Sounds to me like you have a good car with plenty of life left in it yet. 95k miles is nothing for a modern car, provided its been well looked after, and it sounds like you take good care of your car.

I think these days as cars get more reliable often people change because they just want a newer car - fair enough, but if your current car does what you want it to then why spend your money on change for the sake of change?

But then if the wife wants rid of it then who are you to argue :)

    Keep it.....
You know the full history of the car and its not giving you problems atm..You have obviously maintained it well, but who knows what problems you could be buying with whatever you get to replace it.
Get a mechanic to give it the once over to see if anything else may need doing and weigh up the costs and pros and cons.

I think the wife will win though;)

I just change when i feel like a change. If an older car costs a few hundred pounds per year to keep on the road its probably a lot less than you would lose each year in depreciation on a newer model.
  • I wouldn't change it. Sounds like a smashing motor!

When its cheaper to buy and run a different car. Or when you can afford and wish to get something better.
Work in progress...Update coming July 2012.
