Surely there should be NO amount of taxpayers' cash going to these millionaire bankers. Unbelievable!!

And to think I used to rage against childrens tax credits, at least some of this money was going to the poor!

So will you join Billy Bragg in withholding your taxes.. He's ovbviously self employed which would make it easier.... but??

I don't agree at all - he's simply asking that Alasdair Darling limit bonuses to a maximum of 25K - still more than many peoples' yearly salary.

The worth of a banker? - I'm not including the retail sector - well it's the worth of a failed business sector that brought the economy to its knees and one that we'll all be paying for for decades.

And as for the 'spongers'....Jeremy Kyles' programme, if you can call it that, is hardly representative of the many, many people in danger of poverty and actually in poverty thanks to this government's policies of pumping money into the banks and ignoring manufacturing, farming and all the other industries that actually provide something useful.

And what about the enormous tax revenues that banking brings, and has brought over the last decade ,that have helped stop those people 'in danger of poverty' from actually being in poverty?

If you make a £10m profit for your company, why should your commission on that be limited to £25,000?

Or do we want RBS to make no profits?
How do you make profits if you don't incentivise people?

p.s. I don't work in banking, or even in financial services but I do believe that profit making people should be handsomely rewarded.
  • Bonuses for most of those involved in investment banking come from historical means of saving money for the bank. Pensions are only linked to salaries and not bonuses for example. If someone is on a salary of £70k and "usually" gets a bonus of £30k, then the reality is that for most, they should be paid £100k and not £70k.

I worked in a forward role, on the trading floor and even there, most of my income was related to my performance. When large profits came in, we never received 300% bonuses or anywhere near that and yet when things went wrong, we argued that we should not suffer as we were not directly responsible. Today's situation is little different. Very few income generators are paid massive numbers and few managers are paid 6 figure bonuses.

The simple fact is that instead of paying salaries, banks have paid bonuses. It is essentially deferred salary and not performance related. We can't all live in £100k houses you know and now the tax is 51% or so, we only get half at the marginal level and the first 30k or so is just food and pocket money.

Of course he can choose whatever course of action he likes. My guess is it's all bluster, like those middle aged celebs that claimed they'd leave the country if New Labour got in.
Would I be right in thinking that you have left the country Generali?

I think your advice came a tad too late!! Half the south west is ALREADY owned by Londoners - and with the bonuses that are just about to be paid out this month (averaging £190K - EACH) you can expect most of the remaining 50% of land down their taken up by the rest of them.:o
