Oh, just seen posts above - hmmm, so you think £150 is too much??? Arghhh.

Hey bungle4x4, I just don't want to pay too much - and I do worry that when I walk into a garage, I'm like a flashing rip me off symbol as I clearly know nothing about cars or costs. So, this is my MSE attempt at trying to be a wee bit savvy about getting good quality, but at a non-blonde persons price. Thanks for making me think twice about safety though - I appreciate that x

brakes... the bit that stops the car.... the car that weighs about a ton and a half and can do 100 mph...

yep, thats the bit i'd save money on...

What are you saying? Go to dealer and pay top whack?

I would probably use Euaro parts or German and Swedish but not sure if they do Vauxhall. Been a while since I have used them.

    Just an example

£150 might not be that far away depending on the parts cost. Parts plus £30-£50 for labour.

    Which model is it?
£50 to £100 for parts seems reasonable.

And as I was feeling lazy, I recently paid an hours labour just to get the back pads done, it actually took then about 75 minutes.

so your suggestion is pay over the odds for work that could be done for less but the same quality or even better quality parts or workmanship?

op front discs and pads can be bought for around £25 to £35 from a motor factors (im assuming your car isn't anything too fast) for a run of the mill astra or corsa.

labour should only be an hour or 2 at the very most. i wouldn't pay anyone more than £150 tops to do front discs and pads.

The parts I used on the Peugeot were Girling and Ferodo, so certainly not skimping on quality there. Unfortunately the main dealers charge astronomical labour costs nowadays, and then the full retail price for the parts. Any good motor factors should be able to get OE parts, and as long as you have a good set of spanners, a torque wrench, a set of spline/allen extractors, and a bit of mechanical knowledge, then brakes are not rocket science.
They do however demand that you take your time, making sure that everything is degreased, fits OK, and everything tightened correctly.
Always check the road wheels every week, to see that wheel nuts are OK.

Actually, with pads, it's very hard to get OE quality.
Our motor factors only did Ferodo SL, not the OE Premier range
    http://www.ferodo.co.uk/ferodo_home/

then click car products on the left

The dealer stocked the aftermarket range, OE was a special order, in the end I went for Mintex, but the OE line wasn't cheap.
The stopping on Mintex was different, much better than the dealer supplied aftermarket ones I took out, back to as good as the originals in the car when new.

Fair enough, but did they cost £50 a pair for pads and discs.??
