Duty Free on a day trip from Stansted

Going on a day trip soon and know that the airport there (Torp Oslo) does not sell cigarettes.
If I buy them at Stansted in the morning, take them with me, then return later that evening, am I likely to be contravening some customs law?

Don't see a problem. You are leaving the EU so entitled to buy duty free cigs and the fact you a returning the same day makes no difference.

Oslo has stopped selling cigarettes? Didn't know that... but no I think you're fine... not sure if you have to have been out the country for more than 24 hours or something like that though... If in doubt... ask in the dutyfree shop :)

  • Yes, I was in Torp last August, and no cigarettes to be found, so hopefully I will be OK buying at Stansted, and have no probems returning within 24hours!

Because the cigs you are buying will be duty free you will only be allowed to bring 200 cigs back with you without paying the appropriate vat and duty on importation, ie when you re-enter the UK

  • Stanstead has a dutyfree shop available when you return through the terminal near the exit, I noticed last september when I came through, worth asking information desk at airport if prices are same and then get cigs on way back. Also don't they sell them on the plane or has that stopped now.
  • Whoops, I seem to have mixed up my airports:o
Maybe smoking has fuddled my memory.
Torp definately does have a very decent duty free shop, I mixed it up with Gothenberg, which doesn't.
Still, it seems it is cheaper to buy cigarettes over here than in duty free in Torp.

I did not pay that much attention to the Stansted outlet on arrival when I walked past it on Sunday, but I had the impression it was duty-paid rather than duty free so no use for smokers.

They dont sell cigs at the duty free shop when you arrive back in the UK they have a limited stock of perfume/aftershave/edt drink and chocolates no fags though, if you want to buy them you will need to purchase them in departures not arrivals.
