verbal acceptance of job- is it legally binding

Options
sorry if this is the wrong place but I needed some really really quick advice.

If I verbally accept a job (actually Im going to accept it by e mail) can i later back out of it if my circumstances change (before the start date obviously) or are you legally obliged to take it?

My life is in a bit of upheaval at the moment and I just want to keep my options open for a week or so.....

AFAIK, you're not legally obliged, although arguably there is a moral obligation - you're not only letting the employer down but quite possibly someone else has been turned down for the job due to you being offered it.

If circs change after you have accepted and you genuinely can no longer take up the position that's one thing, but to accept the job knowing you might not take it up IMO is a bit off.

Thanks, I know its not morally very nice and thats why I am feeling guilty.

Its just family circumstances...I need to make some decisions as soon as possible.

I donr want to turn the job down, only to regret not taking it in a week's time.

Can you not try and explain that to the employer and say you will tell them by x date but you don't want to say yes and then let them down...

  • A verbal agreement in these circumstances is not legally binding. People accepting appointments and not actually being able to take them up is not uncommon but it's only fair to tell the employer as soon as possible if you change your mind. Do not expect the same employer to ever consider you for any other vacancies in future if you have to decline.
