TV Licence Rip off

I am moving into my first home next week and need a TV license. At the moment I am living with my parents, who own a TV license, so I have not needed one of my own until now.
I want to pay by direct debit since I can't afford to be paying £142.50 right now.
When getting to the payment confirmation screen on the website, this is how it totals it up:

So its asking me to pay the full annual fee of £142.50 between now and 01/06/2010!
Surely this can't be right, why should I have to pay for the months I have not been living at the property?

You can get a pre-payment card where you pay £5.50 a week.

I think that it is standard practice. The direct debits are usually set up so that you pay the annual fee half in advance and half in arrears. This means that for the first year that this is in place, your annual payments can only come from the latter six months.
For example, in your figures, the DDs from Jan-Jun 2010 relate to the year 2010. The DDs from Jul 10 to Jun 11 relate to the 2011 year. Come next year you will find that Jul 11 to Jun 12 relate to 2012, and so on.No trees were killed to send this message, but a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced. - Neil deGrasse Tyson (@neiltyson)0 -

Never mind freedom of choice - you will pay the tax for BBC - even if you don't watch it.0 -
Or you could just listen to the radio and/or take up reading. No-one needs a TV.0

This is one of the few occasions I will side with the 'rip-off' cries. The fact that you are not permitted to pay for a TV licence on a month by month basis is disgusting.
The BBC is a bargain and great value in every other respect. But this six-month premium is just ridiculous.
I wonder how many customers are automatically refunded this premium on their death or termination of contract?0 -

If you prefer to watch the Chav-TV garbage churned out by ITV then you deserve to be taxed anyway.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
