For all the hasle, would it not be better to buy all the spindles and be done with all the stripping etc. Ive spent the last month or so stripping stairs/spindles/rail. Pain in back side, and I feel like the skin on my hand/finglers are stripping off too. But on the plus side Its gonna look lush.

Just a penny for my thoughts. - Thats if I had to do it again.

Agree with that, if you have to get one or two spindles copied to replace missing/damaged ones anyway, it cost very little more to have the whole lot done.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Thanks for advice however I have managed to strip the majority of spindles last night and they look good! The stuff i used worked wonders - I painted it on then rubbed it off after about 1 hour.
I am unable to replace all as dont have the money nor the tools to remove the rail to get to the spindle.

Macman any ideas from the pic I posted re the white underneath the varnish?

Slowly I am moving towards the idea of just painting it all white as the different colour spindles and rails leave me confused..

Thanks for all advice ... :)

    Quick update
Got a B&D mouse sander - it is fab! I have made great progress, it also has a fingerlike attachment for spindles!
I do recommend for anyone embarking on doing banisters etc :)
