Doubling the RAM (relative to other attributes) is probably the easiest and cheapest way to increase performance IMO
  • i tried running disk defrag, it got to 13% and told me that some files could not be defragged.....why would this be?

You need more RAM. 256 is WAY too small to run all the service packs etc these days
1 gig would see a HUGH increase in speed
Goto CRUCIAL.COM to find out what you need

You also need to CUT and PASTE a load of your pictures/documents from C drive to D drive to free up C drive which is running on its limits. Once thats done you can start defragging (I recommend DEFRAGGLER)

What happened to the MALWAREBYTES log?

TICK these in hijack and click to FIX them ~
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {E9012F71-4E21-4CA5-8CF6-624A45D8EEE7} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WorksFUD] C:\Program Files\Microsoft Works\wkfud.exe
    O23 - Service: Boonty Games - BOONTY - C:\Program Files\Common Files\BOONTY Shared\Service\Boonty.exe

(the one in BOLD really needs removing)

Uninstall the YAHOO toolbar (Known resource hog)

Also run CCLEANER to see if t can free up some space ~
Download CCLEANER (Click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION' ~ UNTICK the yahoo toolbar)
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
Run the top scan (Untick COOKIES before running)

The malwarebytes scan you did is well out of date
    Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.42
    Database version: 3344
    Windows 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3
    Internet Explorer 8.0.6001.18702

You need to UPDATE to malwarebytes version 1.44 and maybe update again to get the database version upto date (Yours is months out of date), then run a FULL scan (You ran a 'quick' one)

Certainly worth running the MalwareBytes scan as a precaution, but I think the main problem the OP has is inadequate RAM and C drive nearly full. Once that's sorted, a full defrag and disk clean up should keep it going for a few more years.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

It's because around 15% space is needed to shuffle the files around, think of it as emptying cupboards, you need somewhere to store things before you put them back.

Just had a quick look at Crucial, but can't find your exact model, can only find rx401 etc.
If it is rx401 them max RAM is 3 x 512MB, even adding 1x 512MB to your existing 256MB will give you a huge improvement for around £16.
    Move along, nothing to see.
