When you say a dealer do you mean a one man band trader type thing?

I've purchased from a subsidary of a dealer group that has several manufacturer franchises as part of ther group. Can't name them for obvious reasons.

A 1.3 CDTI Astra isn't exactly quick off the mark when it's not restricting itself to 3,000 revs and the turbo isn't working - it was literally crawling off the line and I either held up the queue of traffic behind me or didn't have enough time to pull onto a roundabout, or both.

It's annoying when you can't do more than 35-40mph comfortably on a clear, straight road with other traffic expecting you to - it's dangerous to not be able to move off from traffic lights / roundabouts at a resonable pace in a busy city centre.

if you didn't feel confident in driving it in that condition you should have pulled over and called out your breakdown company. or got in touch with the garage and asked them to come and tow it.

ive been in the situation in a fully loaded van, just left fantastic merc dealer after a service and went into limp mode, wouldn't rev over 2000 rpm and couldn't hit 40. it wasn't dangerous though, things just took longer.

I have vehicle-only cover with the AA so they'd have told me they have no record of that vehicle against a policy.

Didn't think of calling the dealer at the time tbh - fair point :)

being stabbed in the !!!!! would be an awful thing to happen, a car going in to limp mode is just annoying and nowhere near as frightening as the op would like you to beleive.

the op asked for advise when they already knew the answer and exactly how they were going to deal with it,so this thread is pointless.

some folk think this forum is all about telling folk what they want to hear, but fortunatly on the motoring forum that doesn't happen often, folk get the truth and brutaly honest replies where needed.

    have a good day!

    +1

Limp home mode can be caused by something as simple as an engine sensor failing. All that is happening is the car is protecting the engine from damage that would otherwise potentially be caused. Its quite a clever feature actually.

My Alfa did it and it was simply an air flow meter failure - certainly nothing catastrophic.

The mileage I thought it had is correct - 44,000. The sales invoice states 38,000 and the third party warranty has also been registered @ 38,000 miles rendering it void - but obviously I'd have had this amended if I did decide to keep the car.

It's a 2005 Vauxhall Astra 1.3 CDTI Club - registered November 2005. £4795 + £149 for 6 month warranty from AutoProtect. £2000 part exchange for my current car and the rest paid by debit card.

Interesting. I sell Auto Protect warranties - only sell the top of the range ones.

12 months is £180 and 24 months is £240. Parts and labour.

Hmmm they offered me completely different package to that tbh - 6 and 12 months with £500/£1000 claim limits. Sure the top 12 month one they did was more expensive than your 24 month one :-/.

Plus, thanks to their error, it's not worth the paper it's written on.
  • We dont have claim limits on ours.

    .

That is because all our cars go out in the correct condition and we have a very low claim rate on our policy. Hence why we can sell the warranties at such a low price.

Actually, the claim limit on ours is the purchase price. But nothing will cost that mucg to fix lol.

Heh - maybe explains it then, maybe a lot of people end up having to claim.

Not me - the car will hopefully no longer be mine by the end of this week.
