Thanks for being so quick to reply - have said yes to all and it is now busy running again. Looks like it is going to take a very long time to finish though.0
-
Well the scan looks like it has got about a quarter done - only another 6 hours then until it has finished!
The progress window shows that it has moved Combofix.exe ("probably BATCH.Virus") and also CLhelper.exe ("probably trojan.packed.based") so far. I suspect that when it has finished running it will ask me if I want to Cure, Rename, Move or Delete these items (and any more it may find). Which option shall I choose when it finally gets there?
Thanks in advance.0 -
Move them all (possible to retrieve them if need be then):idea:0
-
Dr Web took 6 and a half hours to run (how come it takes so long?) and moved 3 items - Combofix.exe that was located on the Desktop, combofix.exe that it appeared to have moved to quarantine (huh?) and clhelper.
I've re-immunised with Spybot but it refused to let me immunise the windows hosts section unless I right clicked on the spybot icon and selected run as administrator.
I then ran Hijackthis and again had an error to do with the hosts file unless I ran it as administrator.
There is only one user account on this laptop and it has administrator rights so why do I have to select run as administrator? Do I need to change a setting somewhere?
The HJT file is as follows:

Why some computers need to have 'run as' selected ive still not got my head around yet
Anyways ~
Lets look at whats running now
TICK to FIX these ~

Other suspect items are ~
C:\Advanced Wheel Mouse\wh_exec.exe
O23 - Service: NTI Backup Now 5 Backup Service (NTIBackupSvc) - NewTech InfoSystems, Inc. - C:\Program Files\NewTech Infosystems\NTI Backup Now 5\BackupSvc.exe

I get the feeling its the 'acer bio protection' (Some form of 'fingerprint' detection?) that may be causing the slow issues:idea:0 -
Thanks for that - I've fixed the items you suggested except the batteryalarm.exe on startup as that is a tiny program which gives an audible alarm when the battery is low (unlike the rubbish one provided with Vista).
The suspect items you mention are the software I think that is needed to make the mouse function fully, and NTI backup which was pre-installed but has never even been looked at (my son does his homework on the laptop and copies the files onto a memory stick fairly regularly so has never needed anything serious for performing back ups).
Next to the touch pad is a fingerprint recognition thing which I think may well be the Acer Bio thing.
Would you suggest getting rid of any of this lot?
What shall I do with the Dr Web exe file? (It is currently in the Downloads folder as it doesn't appear to have installed itself or placed an icon on the desktop.) And the quarantined files? I had been going to ask if I should delete Combofix that was on the desktop but Dr Web quarantined it - I didn't want the program run by accident by my son or anyone else playing with the laptop.0 -
Just delete the Dr Web icon

Is it on worth uninstalling to see if thats whats causing the problem. At the end of the day its now trial and error:idea:0 -
The batteryalarm.exe doesn't actually install - I don't think - it is a small exe file.
I'll get rid of the Dr Web exe file - what happens to those quarantined combofix files? Do I need to delete them?0 -
Dont worry about the combofix files
If you wish to test the battery program out then download CCLEANER
Download CCLEANER (Click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION' ~ UNTICK the yahoo toolbar)
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
Run the top scan (May as well have a clean up whilst its on)
Gto TOOLS and STARTUP and untick the battery one, then reboot the computer to see how it is
If no different retick and reboot it:idea:0 -
OK will try that - already use CCleaner, so have it downloaded and installed, to try to clean up startup items and the like.
Guess that is all then - many, many thanks for all your help in trying to sort this out - enjoy a virtual pint on me! :beer:0
