Safety Recall

My car of seven months old has been recalled for a safety check.
Phoned garage today to book car in for the check.
They need the car for at least a couple of hours.
Do I have any rights to have a courtesy car?
Garage said I would need to pay around £15 to cover insurance.
Best they will do for me is drop me in nearest town and pick me up when job has been done.
Seems rather harsh when it is no fault of mine.

Can anyone help please.

What's harsh? They've offered a car but you need to pay for the insurance, you could use your own ins. but you're likely to be charged as well. Alternatively they offered to give you lift to and from the dealers. What more do you want them to do?
  • you could always just not bother with the recall?

Which means the warranty (if it is still covered) would be null and void, or worse it could be for something like wheel nuts, which would mean in a crash you could be taken to be liable as you were notified of a potential serious fault and you chose not to rectify it, ergo knowingly driving an unroadworthy vehicle on the public highway.
Its 2 hours...go have lunch, wander round the shops...its what I did when my windscreen was getting replaced, not hard to kill 2 hours....at worst...go visit the library and read a book for 2 hours
  • Sorting out insurance for 2hrs use is a little over the top.

Can not believe why someone would want a courtesy car for such a short time, it is not the garages fault either that the car has been recalled.

Just take a good book and sit in their reception! Most main dealers have decent coffee machines these days.

Depends what the recall is for. If it's a serious issue (car likely to blow up, bonnet fly off etc) then bite the bullet, take a good book, and find somewhere comfy to sit. If it's something less serious (headlamp relay failure was a good one) then hang off till it's convenient to you. I got a lift back home when my truck went in for work, then a lift back later on. OK, I felt like a third wheel with no car, but it gave me a chance to get some work done on the house.

I wouldn't be able to just take a couple of hours off work like that! You lot must have really cushy jobs! I'd love to sit around and read for a couple of hours - but that is not an option for a lot of us!

  • Book it in for the weekend?

They've offered you a car for the time, if you cover the insurance, which is estimated at £15. To my simple brain, seems like a good deal.

I did ask for the weekend, however they don't do recall work on the weekends incase they come up against any problems which would leave you without a car over the weekend.
Figure that one, the way I see it is, they could come up against a problem with any car, even just in for a service or MOT repairs.

Check the policy wording of your own insurance. If you're over 25 and fully comp you're probably covered third party anyway so don't need to pay them the £15.
