I agree with you entirely, but what you are effectively suggesting, is that the poor should not be able to obtain credit.

Who is to decide if a customer is worthy?

As you rightly point out, if used properly, it is of benefit to some.

Even the worse off, SHOULD be able to decide wether to take a £100 loan for a week until he gets paid/gyro whatever, and repay £120 for it.

The people who have used Wonga and met the terms, seem quite happy with the service, those who make silly decisions are the ones who complain.

^^ yep, all entirely correct but it still doesn't stop my financial compass going crazy when I read some of the stories on here.

I guess my attitude does border on patronising the poor but I can't help it. People with correct money management skills (even on benefits) shouldn't need these services so they are in effect, praying on the poor or finacially weak.

I guess in the end, people make their own mistakes, they will either learn form it or not.

I have used Wonga 3 times over the past 12 months, only for small amounts for say a week or so but have always paid it back, Iv never had a problem with them and understand the terms, I would never borrow the money if I doubted I could pay it back. I think its down to the individual to decide if they are sensible enough to pay it back. When you have things that pop up that need paying then it is handy, I have no family etc that I would be able to nip to to borrow from.

I have had 2 loans with Wonga over the past 2 years and had no problem until this last time. I owe a fair bit on credit over various ways and thought I was ok. Able to pay everything that I needed etc and then my hours were cut at work quiet a bit. I went and spoke to the bank and they worked out what I owe and what I take in and the up shot was that the bank would not take on any credit from other people so I was in touch with the CCCS who started to organise a plan for me to get rid of all my debt.

I took there advice and got in touch with all that I owe and all have seemed to take it ok that is apart from Wonga. A phone call this morning and they said they had sent an email to me.

    Thanks for your email.

When you applied for a loan with us, you chose your own terms by selecting both the amount that youborrowed and the period that you wished to borrow for. In doing so you entered into a formal agreement with us and implied in making the contract that you had both the means and the intention to repay the loan as well as any fees and interest that had accrued, on the date of your choice.
Our decision to lend to you was made on the basis of this contractual commitment from you. Should you have deliberately entered into a contract with us where you have no intention or no means to complete it, we are at liberty to consider your actions a deliberate attempt to deceive us and to treat the matter as fraud.
Where you can demonstrate (with tangible proof) that, between the point of you borrowing and the point that you contacted a debt management or similar company, that you have suffered a material change in your financial circumstances which you have not negligently brought upon yourself, then we may consider an offer submitted such a company.
We currently require you to repay your loan in full 15 August 2010. Should you choose not to repay us and where we do not receive proof of a change in your financial circumstances, we may consider that you have obtained credit from us by deception and will treat your conduct as criminal. As such we will have no obligation to treat the monies due to us as a debt rightfully borne from a credit agreement but as a
potential loss caused by fraud. We will pursue this matter, by whichever means that we see prudent, that is to say as a civil matter or by reference to the police, until we are content that our interest are protected.
We urge you to ensure that sufficient funds are made available for us on Sunday 15th August 2010 to settle your loan as agreed.

    Kind regards,

    Collections Department

I have no idea whether anybody else has received anything like this but I walked into this with my eyes open but it is still not nice to receive these emails

Surely you have proof from your place of work that your hours were cut after taking the loan out.

    Good luck with it though.

I do and have told them this but they dont seem to want to play ball. I honestly now believe that as soon as I spoke to them it set the alarm bells ringing and this is just a standard frigtning letter but I cant be certain. They want the money now and that is it.

    Thanks for the good luck

I would think you are correct in that it is a standard letter they push out.

You only have to look at their target customer to see that many of them are living hand to mouth.

It is a fair assumption that an unnaturally high percentage of applicants to these companies, apply for the loan without any mechanism at all in place to repay the loan.
People need to eat today, which leads to a cloud of misjudgement.

You only have to spend a couple of hours reading the posts on here to see quite how many people fail to repay.
The relaity is, there was never any chance of repaying when the Months money is spent on essentials alone, without considering repaying a loan on top.

Companies like this are well versed in dealiing with these issues and will have robust (and well executed) methods of dealing with non payers.

I am fairly new on here so I do not know whether this has been said before, but after talking to my bank I have realised that Wonga and most other payday loan companies are on a clever trick.

They ask for the long debit card number which comes as what my calls a debit guarantee, basically there is no way to reject this payment when they ask for it unless the card is not active.

A normal derect debit will be sent back my a bank but becasue they have that card numer it has to be paid no matter what.
