Why is it that going to University Costs so much.

Is it me or do university costs just seem so ludicrously expensive that it puts most people off going.

The government is quite happy to tell people that they need to go to university and that we have a lack of skilled workers but yet they make a near impossibility for a lot of poorer families to even consider it.

It must be a daunting thing for poorer families when they hear how much university costs are and therefore put the thought out of their mind before they even consider it.

I feel that something must be done to prevent this or the government should at least make costs a lilttle lower.

The gap between college and university fees seems colossal in comparison.

university nowadays I feel is a lifestyle choice - I'm almost 40 and will be going to uni hopefully this year, UCAS application is in, but I will be self-funding my way through uni and as I'm in Scotland I will get my fees paid for me.

Skilled workers do not have to go to uni - by that I assume you mean trades - they train on the job and go to college, usually for four years on and off. if you mean lawyers/doctors, etc then inheritantly their family has usually been well enough to pay for them to go through uni.

A uni degree is not a path to success - I would hate to be 18 and be in the situation of having to choose whether to go to uni or college or take a job somewhere. In my day (!) only those with either the brains or backed finacially by their family went to uni, the rest of us went on to YTS schemes and worked out way up, or went to become a trade.

It's not really up to the government - universities are run as businesses now, if you want to go to uni then you have to pay for it I'm afraid, and pay back when you start to earn a sufficient income. For sure the government introduced student loans, student fees, but not everyone has to go to uni!

I have never felt like the financial side of things are a barrier to going to uni, and I by no means come from a "well off" background whatsoever. You get loans and grants to cover expenses, you pay them back when you are earning enough to live reasonably. Whether tuition fees are value for money or not is another question, but general living expenses are pretty much the same whether you're at uni or in employment, I would imagine. I don't think it really matters at all whether someone comes from a poor family or not when it comes to uni.

University fees are still heavily subsidised by the government; the amount that students have to pay is a fraction of the actual costs.

Actually, students from poorer families can be comparatively comfortable financially at university as there are grants and bursaries available to them as well as student loans; these aren't available to students from wealthier families.

Few students come out of uni with any usable skills. When you put how much it costs with the useless specimens you get out it's not even slightly worth it.

I think that is a ridiculous comment to make, and I'm slightly offended, to be honest.

When you've employed as many of the supposedly capable graduates as I have, you'll agree with me ;)

No common sense, can't spell, can't carry out even simple tasks without needing their hands held. Think the world owes them a living. Need to discuss the whys and wherefores of every tiny detail when I just need them to do as they're told. Know little about the world, poor basic education (due to the dumbing down of GCSEs, A levels and degrees these days to meet Government targets), little interest in anyone else.

    I could carry on. ;)
