What do you want it to do? How much do you want to use it? What will you use it for (how much download allowance do we need to try and find?)? Contract? PAYG? Do any networks not cover your postcode?

It sounds like you need a wifi router, so both of you can use the Virgin connection at the same time. A dongle is a new/separate/additional service normally, unless you mean you want a dongle as a method of reaching your existing wifi hub/kit.

    Hi
I do not want a wifi to connect laptop to main computer internet,as that would mean making the computer wifi which my son does not want to do also he says it would slow down the connection speed .( when playing his xbox )
I want to use the laptop independently

Wireless routers normally have 4 WIRED ports as well as wireless so the son's PC can stay wired whilst giving wireless access to your laptop.

A dongle will never give anything like the same performance as a wired connection in most situations. Latency in particular os TERRIBLE on a dongle, I get about 300ms vs about 12ms on wired.

    Hmmm
A router can cope with several signals, unless you are doing large downloads at the same time as the gamer, there will be no noticeable difference in speeds.
I assume that its your house and that you pay the internet bill...

    Try the wifi first.

We have 3 laptops here all connecting at the same time as Sue's son kills people  on his Xbox and he see's no impact on his speed at all. If I need to download anything of any size I simply do it overnight. Is he paying the bill?:p
