Slow BT Broadband? find out why...

Does this mean that these 'public' networks are only available if you use the BT router? If you use a different router from a different manufacturer, the OpenZone/BTFON won't work?
I'll be fuming if I find they are selling my broadband connection to other people when they don't even give me anywhere near the speed advertised in the first place.0 -
This only stops you accessing BTO/F before your other networks

Hi
Well I had BT internet courtesy of my daughter who was a BT employee so she let me have her emploee BT internet package so I got it free, well she has been made redundant so I have had to look for and pay for my internet again
Well BT reckon they were giving me the fastest speed my line would allow (I had the wireless turned off along with the other networks metioned above) so no fear of anyone using my internet connection other than myself, well after a bit of research and talking to a tech guy I know I decided to try a company that has LLU in my exchange (advice of the Tech guy) and so far I have been delighted, my speed is more than double the speed I was getting with BT, speed checked proior to change over and used and same speed checker for new ISP chnage over was smooth and no problem , about 20mins down time.
So on talking to the tech guy he reckons BT may have been traffic shaping the data in my exchange hence the reason for the speed increase on my new ISP as the only bit of BT,s network I use now is the line from my house to the exchange, then its straight onto my new ISPs network.
In case you are wondering about traffic shaping and what I may be using my internet for well I surf the net and emails, almost no downloading and almost no video streaming, so almost no high bandwith stuff, in fact when I called to get my mac code from BT the lady commented that I was a low bandwith user.0 -

From that link-This only stops you accessing BTO/F before your other networks
"Remove the BT Openzone entry if you no longer require it. Select BT Openzone in the list and click on the Remove button."0 -
That link still only deletes the option to connect to Openzone, the actual workings of Openzone/FON are not affected they are controlled from the HUB and thus far I haven't found how to delete them from there. Mind you I dont have Home Hub here, my friend has it on his and he works at BT but has gone to India for 3 weeks so cannot ask him if there is a way until he returnsFrom that link-

Far from 'Boycotting BT', I find they provide a good, reliable fast broadband service. It's not the cheapest, but then I'm happy to pay for the reliability rather than go through a third party provider.
The BT retail that you buy broadband from ARE a third party provider, in exactly the same way as any other ISP. There are regulators in place to ensure that BT Retail receives no preferential treatment from wholesalers.
I'm saddened to read that you've been conned into paying extra for a service in the belief that they are not a third party provider.0 -

I think that's true - I spent an hour on the phone to BT broadband technical support who claimed hiding the networks on you PC/Laptop turns them off but obviously without changing the configuration of the BT Home Hub you will never turn them off. After 60 minutes the supervisor told me that I cant turn BTopenzone off or BTFON because those networks are not mine, they belong to BT...just a shame I have to pay BT to provide a service to others which they make money on
As for hacking the Hub, I am not sure how but if you google 'Home hub hack' there are plenty of how to guides which is really concerning!

Regarding how to disable it, don't worry BT seem to keep this a secret. You can opt out of BTFON but it does not change your HUB settings. I also don't think the BTopenreach network can be disabled. I think the only way to remove these features on the new firmware is to remove the HUB completely and use an alternative device connected to an ADSL modem.
When you opt out of BTFON BT will disable the BTFON/Openzone access on the hub. They ask you to leave it on for 48 hours so they can do this. My neighbour opted out and he did see the hub do some odd things the following morning. I haven't checked for sure that it is gone.0 -
Go to this website to check the status of your BTFon account and 'opt out' if you want to:
