fuel duty heros

..........remember the truckers that blockaded the fuel depots 5 years ago?............that visibly sent a message - I dont know how effective it was but at least people didnt sit back quietly, they voiced their discontent.........

Since then....

its very quiet - about the fact that fuel prices are at 110p per litre. a 20%ish increase.

How high will it have to go before people demonstrate? will Brown just ignore motorists anyway, increasing fuel duty as he plans to do..........

where are the heros?

What are you doing about the price increase??
Its a win win situation for the government they want people to use there cars less because of global warming, so people think a little more about using the car for smaller journeys. If people buy the fuel they get more money from the tax.

global warming is scaremongering to levy green taxes. nothing more nothing less, I hope in a referendum we do the same as Australia has in rejecting them.

Ive just noticed how little people are actively protesting like in the past - a sign of anti terror laws I think I remember they made it a terrorist offence to blockade fuel depots......

All im doing is cutting back on journeys - no trips to the city centre to go shopping - no trips on the weekend for holidays in the UK where we used to spend money for national tourism....... cheaper to fly to spain return than a hundred mile round trip in the car.

Global warming is another tax tax word.
What makes me laugh, they increase fuel duty, global warming being the excuse. But aviation travel being the largest contributor of global warming, what do they do, plans to go ahead with a second runway at Stanstead are still going ahead.

If thats what you truly believe, then only time will tell. If they are right and everyone has that attitude it will be too late to do anything about it. Obviously if they are wrong then nothing is going to change, but as they say "Prevention is better than cure".

It's easy to talk about protest when your sat on a computer but actions do speak louder than words, if you think a protest will resolve the ever increasing fuel costs then maybe you should organise a protest.

Only reason the petrol strike worked in the past was because the oil companies (for whatever reason - I can't remember) were "in on the act" they allowed their tanker drivers to not drive out the gates, on the pretence that a few people (standing on the pavements) outside the gates chaperoned by an equal number of police officers somehow created a health and safety hazard.

Blair had the Oil Execs into Downing Street for a quiet chat and soon after the tankers drove past the people on the pavements, and it was all over. It will never happen again in that way. In the future it will be up to the people & truckers to do "Drive slows" on motorways, but the police will only allow one lane to be blocked so it becomes useless. The only protest that will work will be something like this.......
    2009112064732486.jpg

where people abandon their cars (not just taxi drivers) in their thousands on the roads, -abandon them because they are worthless because of the cost of fuel. But how many people will really be willing to abandon their cars worth a few thousand pounds, and then have police towing fines on top of that, and the police will be unconcerned about causing damage to the vehicles to get them removed quickly.

And even if the tax revenue is reduced from the price of petrol (only to be replaced by the oil companies raising the price to take up the slack) the tax will be just moved onto some other part of society.

whats that silver car in the picture? its nice.

it would take a concerted effort - and peaceful resistance against the police to make a statement. Then again, the miners strike and poll tax strike didnt stop the demise of the coal industry or the introduction of council tax.......I guess the govt doesnt really see protest as a reason to be concerned.

If you think it is bad now, you wait until after the election, whoever wins, it is bound to increase dramatically.
  • The problem is you cut fuel duty you have 2 options- cuts in public services (unpopular but some savings could be made in councils and benefits, but that is already happening) or more likely it gets lumped on elsewhere. They still have to get the same money in anyway. At least fuel duty can in some regard be avoided, better than increasing VAT or income tax!
