Goldfish frozen to death:(

Aw, my Mum just told me that despite her leaving the small pump on so the pond didnt freeze over completely she found her last two remaining goldfish frozen in a big block of ice..
R.I.P Thrasher and Whitey.
I think we will restock the pond in the spring.
The heron got a few , cat got a few, natural causes/old age got a few and now the ice.
Arty.
Actually feeling quite sorry for the scrawny looking heron at present!

How deep is the pond? I was always amazed at my mam and dad's old house because their pond would have a massive thick bit of ice at the top, and the fish would still be swimming around underneath. I suppose it's what they'd do in the wild, but I was still always surprised to see it!

  • Maybe you could supply a few fish for the heron. Not yours of course. Mind you it might not take non-moving fish.

Well... my OH had a goldfish pond in his garden... he thought his fish were frozen to death... left them in a bucket to wait for the ground to thaw so we could bury them and after 2 days they came back to life!!!

We saw them twitch, put them back into the water and they were fine!

They were frozen solid in 2 inches of ice and lived for 3 years after their near death experience!

Dont give up hope on them, fish are surprisingly hardy animals!

Also I know this is different but we came home once and the cat had the goldfish out of the bowl and down the stairs (we lived in a threee storey house) Mam put the goldfish in the bowl again and it was just like on its side doing nothing, I am sure it was dead, then she put some whiskey in the bowl (cos she had heard Brandy was good but she had none) and the next morning she was alive, she lived a long time

Are you sure she didn't just nip down to the pet shop and got a similar one while you weren't looking? ;)
