Southern Electric...dodgy boiler and sludge in system

Hi All,

I have just had a engineer from Southern Electric come out to look at our boiler as it started to leak.

Basically, my heating system has a lot of sludge in it, which in turn has blocked my heating exchange causing the leak. Water damage to the circuit board as well.... so all new parts have been ordered, no heating though so boo!!! (We don't have to pay as we pay £16.50pm for a service contract).

Anyway going slighlty off the point!

The man has advised that after this work is carried out we need to clean our system and has given me quotes for a power fluish, a magna clean to be fitted and thirdly a magna clean and power flush combo!!

1) Powerflush £480 not including VAT
2) Magnaclean fitted £225 not including VAT
3) both magnaclean and powerflush £610 not including VAT

My hubby and I live in a 2 bedroom masionette with a grand total of 3 radiators for the whole flat.

Would you advise a powerflush or a magna clean or as I read on another thread putting some X400 in our system?

My Dad is an amazing DIYer and can do most things and my Hubby isn't too bad either (different sorry for me lol)

Thanks
Trying to make our money work for us and not the other way round!!

Thanks mealticket for the quick reply!

I don't think our system is completely full of sludge as when the guy drained the system water did flow out but it was a horrible dark brown colour.

I am gonna chat my Dad up later to maybe do it ourselves. My dad works for Karcher (the pressure washer people) so he knows quite a lot pressure cleaning etc etc. Hopefully he will know someone we can ask for equipment to hire.

The boiler is quite old, we moved in 2.5 years ago the boiler had some rewiring done then as it is quite a big boiler (designed for a 4 bed house apparently rather than a 2 bed masionette)

Good morning: rent a power flusher here for a DIY...use Fernox or Sentinel chemicals, and fit a Boiler Buddy or a Magnabooster.
