Epsons used to do this, but they have solved it. I've left my latest one unused for months and it doesn't clog up (and yes, I use compatible cartridges). But he should still get a laser if he only does B/W.

The real cost of any printer is ink. Your choice of brand therefore is Epson Epson Epson or Epson. The Model depends on what you use it for ie photo's etc.

The price of Epson ink is about 30% of the cost of all other brands. Even if you only ever print black, the colours are used each time to keep nozzle clear.

Also, the choice is (some) Canon and Brother printers as well. The ink is cheap because the printhead is part of the printer and not part of the cartridge. When the printhead blocks up, it is either expensive or bye bye printer!

Epson might be 30% the cost of other cartridges but remember, not all cartridges are created equal. One friend of mine replaced their printer because the cartridges were half the price. They hadn't realised that the new cartridges had only 5ml of ink, the old ones 42ml!

Last year I managed to get a Dell 1720dn laser printer off fleabay for £70 brand new. Does perfect prints and the bonus is that it has a network card and prints duplex.
