New printer advice and bargains sought

Dear All,

After the best part of 10 years stirling service, a new laptop with USB-only slots has forced the retirement of my HP deskjet printer. I am therefore on the prowl for a new printer with USB or wireless connectivity. The basic requirements are:

-Only really need mono as only used for document printing.
-Must include scanner.
-Cheapest purchase to ink cost ratio - I only print about 20-30 A4 documents a month.

Apart from that, anything considered. I await your speedy, informed and stimulating responses!!!!:T

Regards,

Damo

I bought an Epson SX515W for £70 from John Lewis use it only for colour printing as I have a laser for B/W but I wanted it as it is wireless and does wireless scanning, comes with a memory card reader as well.

Girlfriend is in need of a laser printer with a scanner/copier and it looks like we have whittled this down to a Brother 7030 at about £120 the good thing is if it is bought and registered before March 31st then the warranty is extended to 3 years on site. You will need to check the price of toner though.
  • Thanks for your thoughts. I've considered laser as an option for cheapest per page printing, and mono only, but I think the additional purchase price relies on muchos use before these economies of scale start taking effect. Still, if anyone knows of a dirt cheap one with free cartridge, it could be the way to go as a cartridge would probably last me several years.

As for the the deskjet options, the cheapest I've found is the HP f2480 all-in-one from Tesco for about £34, but apparently it's a bit friendly with the ink so any saving on initial purchase might soon be lost with regular ink purchasing (thanks for the compatible ink link Mrembo though)! If anyone has any experience of this printer, I'd be keen to hear. Ditto any other musings about other options.

  • The real cost of any printer is ink. Your choice of brand therefore is Epson Epson Epson or Epson. The Model depends on what you use it for ie photo's etc.

The price of Epson ink is about 30% of the cost of all other brands. Even if you only ever print black, the colours are used each time to keep nozzle clear.

If you only print half a ream per annum, ink is less of a consideration.

  • I am also looking for a printer. Attracted to the Epson SX 215. However, for me, the original cartridge is still expensive. I am considering to install the Continuous Ink Supply System (CISS). Anyone have any experience in this?

  • A quick update that I feel fully embraces the ethos of this site. As I mentioned, the reason for needing a new printer was due to a PC to laptop upgrade and therefore the loss of a parallel port in which to plug in the printer. Well, it turns out that parallel to USB adaptor cables exist and £7.50 for one now has my old faithful inkjet up and running and few non-expendable pounds still in my bank account! Thanks very much for everyone's help though.

Go for a laser if you can. Toner lasts SO much longer than ink - by that I mean a toner cartridge can sit there unused for a year and still work - an ink one will have dried up.

Laser / toner is also much better quality for B&W letter type printing, as well as being cheaper per page.

A laser printer is definitely the way to go. As far as I know, all the cheap laser printers (HP, Samsung) come with a cartridge, which will most likely be a sneaky half-full cartridge but will probably still last you years.
