How much do I pay my babysitter?

Hi all,

A friends daughter has offered to babysit for us and we have of course said that we would pay her. However, I have no idea how much to pay. I asked her what she wanted per hour but she didn't really give us an answer (think she felt a bit awkward). If this works then I want to use her again so I don't want to give her too little but also can't afford to give too much.

She is 19 and will have the kids from 8.30am until 6.30pm (so quite a long day).

Any thoughts?

TIA, Ging x

tbh most babysitters, expect around £5/hr - however what you are asking isnt babysitting, thats childminding (and they charge more like £3/hr, go figure)

  • Well if you were paying a nursery or school club it would be £25-30 each per day.
It is a long day...how many kids is she looking after? Even if you based it on £5 per hour at 9 hours would be £45,
If you used a childminder it would be £2.50-£3 per child per hour.
So if its a few children maybe £40?
Ive no idea, but obviously she could go get a job with minimum wage and earn more.

Quite a long day? She will see the kids more than you!!

Exactly as the poster said above. what you are asking isn't babysitting, it's childminding.

Does this 19 year old not have a life? Kids 0830 - 6:30? She may as well be a mum herself!

Hang on guys, it might just be for 1 day!

If it's for 1 day, then I'd suggest somewhere between £30 and £40.

Is it a one off, or will it be a regular thing?

For 1 day, I'd say it was babysitting, but if it was more days then it would be classed as childminding and you'd want to be careful with that.
Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...
  • OP it depends on the age of children imo as lokking after kids over a certain age is going to be easier(therefore cost less;)) than running around all day after a baby and a couple of toddlers IYSWIM

she at least needs to on minimum wage.
  • Are the children school age?

Just wondering as our local playscheme charges about £18 per day (similar hours to what you want) per child.

If you want to base it around what school clubs/nursery would charge, then it'll vary area to area. My nearest holiday playscheme charges £20 for 7.3am-6pm.
IIRC (unless the rules have changed) it is not childminding if it takes place in child's own home.
Personally I would not go for an exact hour by hour rate (though I'd take it into account for roughly) as what happens if your babysitter arrives a few minutes early or your 10 mins later back than to the exact hour.

It may also depend on where you are if you're talking about childminding rates. Where I am the going rate for a childminder is 5.50 an hour. I would think that if you offer her 40-50 pounds for the whole day then she'll be happy. Don't forget that babysitting during the day is a lot harder than babysitting at night when children are usually in bed. She will be working for her money!
