    As mentioned, if the light won't come on, then fitting a switch will be no use. Just been informed now that my sister's touch lamp has blown as well now! Not very reliable, me thinks!

    OP might find they are able to replace the innards entirely to get it working with a conventional fitting and switch.... should be done by someone electrically competent as a snagged/nicked wire or incorrect connection could easily turn it into a deathtrap....

    Not if it's properly earthed. Then you'd just be back at the start with it not working again...

    I got a switch put in mine by an electrician who didn't seem to think it was worth replacing the components needed to make it a touch lamp again. Probably would only have lasted until another bulb blew anyway!
