'Old' new car???

  • Not sure about all cars, but the BMW Mini's options were in some cases dealer fitted, if you wanted a chequered roof the dealer did that, the CD player was fitted at the dealers (they all came with a radio cassette) and the spotlights were again dealer fitted. I know the mini is different but some of this may be the case with other cars depending upon what options you want? (obviously some can only be done at the factory)
I have a lot of problems with my neighbours, they hammer and bang on the walls sometimes until 2 or 3 in the morning - some nights I can hardly hear myself drilling ;)

im not disputing the fact that you can order a car from any manufacturer, but i am saying that they build up a stock, which is then released to dealers who then hold this as stock and will try and push these cars first.
but usually when you order something a bit different and it will need to be made then there will usually be a considerable waiting time, unless your timing was very good.

Fair enough...it came across in one of your earlier posts that you were saying that it's *only* high end manufacturers (I imagine the likes of Mercs, Porsche, Ferrari etc  when you say that) that build to order, when that's not the case.

I agree with what you've said here, so maybe I misunderstood what you were meaning :o

    So to summarise.....

Goldspanners knows all there is to know and when you buy a new car, generally there is one lying down the road and you will get it within the week.

Or in reality...... Goldspanners knows !!!!!! all :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I used to fly helicopters a few years back and regularly overflew the areas car makers 'parked' their cars after manufacture. Not many people can see these areas but let me tell you the numbers are staggering! I've given up trying to count them, once I reached 20,000 and gave up! Surely there must be some oldies among them.

Of course the truth is somewhere in the middle.

Mass market manufacturers must build for stock as it would be impractical and inappropriate to build solely to order. Stock builds will be in popular specs and colours and it makes sense to do these in batches. 'To order' builds are no doubt slotted in between these batches.

'Higher end' manufacturers will have less need to build for stock but, no doubt, all but the most prestigious do so to some extent.
