'Old' new car???

  • they won't get anywhere, theres nothing sinister here.

the factory builds ( to simplify things) for 2 months they build blue cars, for 2 months they build green cars, for 2 months they build black cars, for 2 months they build silver cars, for 2 months they build yellow cars. so if you go in to the dealer and want to buy a new car in blue, it comes from thier stock, which in my scenario will be at least 10 months old.
they don't just phone the factory and "say we will have another blue please, make it a fresh one"

(change the colours for specifications) generally the base spec cars and vans are first built to make it quicker to build stock and maximise initial profit, then the higher spec vehicles get made that may take a little longer.

even before a new model is released they have to build up a stock of them before the release date so they can meet demand.

I agree, this is common and well within the rules. I think they have a limit to register them as new, and I think it is 3 years but don't quote me on it!

theres no legal limit. my dad delivers new cars on a transport for a living, they had a 7 year old mondeo sitting in thier yard a few years back. it was bought by a member of staff at a fantastic price. the model was 7 years old but had 20 miles on the clock and had never been registered. they also had a fiesta and an escort many years ago aswell, they all got lost in the system somewhere along the lines. great bargains for someone though.

Not true. Many cars are now built to order. I ordered a new car early November and it will arrive at the end of the month.

The car was built last Friday and will be very 'fresh'.

If you go on the Mini factory tour in Oxford, you will see its not the case there, the line consists of a complete mish mash of colours and indeed mixed models all on the same line
Thats what JIT was all about, wasn't it

you said "not true, many cars" if you had said "not true all cars" that would have meant what i said was actually not true.

it is true that manufacturers of run of the mill (being a good phrase to coin here) production cars do build up stock. only high end manufacturers build to order.

i think your case may be coincedence, a factory will not re tool a production line just for your one car.

The mini line is renowned for being different!

From my experience, goldpanners is correct (there might be minor differences in a run) but nothing significant

It appears that you don't know what you are talking about.

6 of my last 7 cars have all been built to order - not all high end. Only one that wasn't was delivery mileage so obviously wouldn't be a factory order.

I will quote you again. Not true. End of.

so because 6 cars you have owned were made to order apparently means i don't know what im talking about?
i bet you beleive all the crap the salesman tells you. so whats been so special about you and your 6 cars for them to be built to order rather than off the peg?

My understanding - the most popular specifications are built and are held as manufacturer stock. If you wanted say, a silver 1.8TDI zetec focus, chances are there'll be one in the UK that will be transported to the dealer. If however you asked for a silver 1.8TDI zetec focus, with full cream leather, satnav and a dvd player, then chances are it would have to be built.

My wifes current car - it was one of 9 of the spec she wanted availably in the UK, so one was brought from glasgow to our local dealer. Her previous car - the exact spec wasnt available from stock, so she had the choice of taking one of the cars that was close OR having the car custom built, but the lead time would be several months. My previous car had to be built from scratch and took 4 months. My current car was already in UK stock.

It will vary, so there is no definitive answer.
