Options
hi.. hope i am posting this in the right place......

just been to post some stuff which i sold on ebay.... and the guy behind the counter has told me that in the middle to the end of august... the post office are introducing a new postal pricing scheme.... where they also take into account the size of the package.....so they guy was saying they have templates to guide them... for different thicknesses.... obviously they will be notices around leading up to the change.... but what i am getting at at the begining of august try and find out exactly whats what... so you dont lose out on the postage.... as i think there is going to be some confusion until...it settles down.....

hope that made sense.....the guy in the post office was saying that they are going for regular training....ready for the change over....and he's allready confused.....

so ask at yuor local post office to keep you updated......

It's called pricing in proportion - there's some stuff about it on their website but I can't say I've looked into it carefully.

Last I heard Soolin had lots of the cardboard guides to give us all :rotfl:
    My TV is broken!
Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j

It sounds ridiculous you could send a brick cheaper than a pillow!
Our post office mentioned it as well she just said that they would be charging by size instead of weight.

:rotfl: at frivolous fay..the gauges stopped coming after no 5 and I have given three away and only have two left...it looks terryfying though as my best seller is going to cost a lot more to send, almost twice as much as it is light but too fat to slip thought the letter box bit on the gauge.

sorry if this was posted before....didnt realise...as i dont frequent this section very often....... but its going to be a pain in the butt for me as well as most of the things i sell are light but bulky.....what might happen is that people will not be prepared to pay the postage...

i think i will try and get hold of those gauges and do a dummy run.. so to speak and find out how much things are going to go up by....and then have a re-think on what i am selling....

also want there talk of other companies offering a postal service in compition woth the p.o.

my lovely post lady told me about this last week, so I had a look on the RM site.

so instead of the 32p it currently costs me to send a lipstick (for example) from 21st August it will cost me a £1!!!!

Charges for services shouldn't be going up as the last increase was in April this year and they are capped by how many times they can make general increases. This pricing in proportion is an entirely new system for calculating postal rates so doesn't affect the price increase restrictions as the service is changing not the prices. RM do say they calculate that overall their income will rmeain the same as the people paying more will be counterbalanced by the people paying less.

When it was first released to the press there was an outcry as it was discovered that childrens birthday cards with a badge would have to go as a parcel (or package whatever they call it) and would cost more than 100% more to post. There is also a problem that standard sizes for envelopes are all just a few millimetres to big in most cases and will automatically mean anyone using jiffy bags etc will fall into a higher payment band.

Here's a little bit more about it:

    http://www.neopost.co.uk/index.asp?Page=2724

I particularly like the reassurance that of course we won't have to measure everything as it will be simple! "The price categories should be straightforward to work out. An ordinary envelope up to half the size of a standard A4 sheet will be a basic 'letter', up to A4 size will be a 'large letter', charged at the next price up; and anything bigger will be a 'packet'" so that's all right then , just tell your gran that is's obvious (as long as she knows what A4 is of course)

So, going back to te original question, overseas parcels, packages etc may be more expensive or they may not, it all depends on their size. The same applies to special delivery.

I can just imagine the queues now as they argue over whether its over or under 5mm thick.

you could sit at home and compress a packet , measure it, walk to the post office and find its filled with air again, then even if the postoffice squashes it flat again and prices it, what happens when it inflates again and goes through the sorting machines ?
