Best of luck to you. I wish I'd had the forums on this site available to me when I was in my 20s.

As it is I have taken a lot of advice on board and now, in my mid-40s, I am finally saving money instead of paying off debt. You're very lucky that you have 20 years advantage :).

    I wish you every happiness.

  • Great thread and well do Mr_Original.

I agree with others that you didn't quite have your LBM when you first posted.....well perhaps you did but it was clearly one of those energy saving lightbulbs that take a while to get bright;). Obviously your lightbulb is now glowing at its brightest:T

I am so glad your GF was understanding - the support from the forum is awesome, but it really does help to have at least one real person you can talk to if you need to.

Good luck with the DFW journey - I will follow your journey with interest.

  • Well not really linked, only by name? I have only messed this account up once which caused a direct debit to not go out. in 7 months though this is the only black mark on the account.

do you think this is a big problem for him and his credit rating? as i will remove it if so?

It is likely to be a problem for him. It doesn't matter that you managed the joint account ok, it's your whole credit rating that might affect him. The best thing to do would be for your name to be taken off the account and then for him to apply for his credit files. If any of them mention you then he should write to them and ask for a notice of disassociation. More details here:

    http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/loans/credit-rating-credit-score
Simply marrying or living with someone with a bad credit score shouldn't impact your finances, as third-party data (ie, someone else's info) doesn't appear on your file.

Yet if you're 'financially linked' to someone on any product, it can have an impact. Even just a joint bills account for flat sharers can mean you are co-scored. If one partner has a poor history, keep your finances rigidly separate, and it should maintain access to good credit for the other.

In fact, there are only two common products that can infer financial linking: mortgages and joint bank accounts. As a note, there's no such thing as a ‘joint' credit card. Technically, it's one person's account and the other just has access to it. It is technically possible that joint utility bills could be reported on credit files, though current practice is not to do so.

If you split up with someone you've joint finances with, once the accounts are separated or no longer active, always write to the credit reference agencies and ask for a notice of 'disassociation', to stop their credit history affecting yours in future.

You sound really upbeat and have made a very successful start.

Do keep posting, other DFWs will help to sustain you.

Now for the reminder health warning.......... being a DFW will at times feel like a slog;you will go mad and fall off the wagon; you will feel like throwing the towel in and may revert to some of the behaviours that got you into this mess in the first place.

When this happens come back on here as soon as you can....MSE advice...is the best medicine and you will soon feel better and can get on with being a DFW again.
  • so, how's it going, mr_O? :)
  • hi all!

thought i best drop in and say hi :)

its all going well, only spent 10 on food this week, which was good. also got my ISA back ready to chuck on the card. So going well.

I went to the pub on friday but only spent £20, on a night out, so not perfect but better then the £50 i normally spend!

needs work i know, but getting there 1 step at a time!
