This morning a driving licence (I think, from feeling the envelope) arrived in the post. It has my address on it, but the name is one I don't recognise, it certainly isn't anyone who has lived here in the last 30 years!

What should I do with it? Just send it back marked "Not known at this address"?

It's a new system for generating revenue - you'll get a fine within four weeks for not notifying them of their mistake. :rotfl:

Motorists contribute £40BN to the Exchequer, but only £10BN is spent on the Roads. Seems like they are owed £30BN.

I play a part in paying towards that but for example you pay £8k per year in Tax/NI - you don't get all that back do you ?

If you're worried about DVLA losing your licence and then denying you even had one phone up first and ask for a Letter of Entitlement, it'll cost you £5 but it's an official record of your entitlements. Cheaper and easier than having a copy notorised !

If those who have lost categories in a renewal or whatever had done this then they would have had cast iron grounds to challenge the DVLA.

Officially it's only valid for 3 months from date of issue but that's in terms of actually using it, like you might in say France if you lived in France and lost your UK licence. DVLA won't send a replacement to an address outside of UK but will send a Letter of Entitlement anywhere and in France you can use that to obtain a French licence. Even after the 3 months it's still an enduring record.

But you do at least see that the money being spent on things like the NHS going up. The roads departments always complain that their budgets are frozen, or cut. If the road building programs are constantly cut back, where ARE the billions of pounds excess being funnelled to?

I worked in the DVLA, absolute chaos. It doesn't surprise me that errors have been highlighted, what surprises is me is that it is so few. You can't blame the people, the pay isn't great and just doesn't thrill. However, if the DVLA were to apply some basic lean improvements they would save money, make their processes quicker and more effective, and potentially engage their staff.

Unfortunately, the place has a real civil service feel, and really is a graveyard of ambition.

Maybe worth including a brief letter of explanation in with it when you return. It could just be an error by DVLA or alternatively it could be a fraudlulent application - same person ending up with numerous driver numbers/records by using different addresses
