Walking in snow / ice - shoes?

What are the best shoes / boots for walking in the ice & snow with, please? All I have with me is trainers, which I know are rubbish.

A friend says that wellies are ok - but are they really? Or am I better off buying proper walking shoes?

Would rather not spend too much though.

  • I'd go for a proper pair of walking boots. That's what I've been wearing for what feels like an eternity! The Sports Direct type of places usually have them on special. I'm sure I saw them for £20, might have been cheaper? The brand is karrimor.

Walking boots or something with a good tread pattern are best. wellies dont give proper ankle support and are cold to wear too.
If you can get them .. snow chains such as issued to the postie turn most footwear into the bees knees of human 4 wheel drive.
I've been waiting for the ones I ordered for ages now... demand outstripping supply. Time i get them it will be all over till next year!!

I've got walking boots which I use but I recently had reason to get some steel toe cap boots. I ended up getting a pair of Dickies ones (black leather) from Wickes, and I've found them so comfortable I've been wearing them pretty much non stop recently. The other advantage for me is that being black leather, I can wear them under my work trousers and no-one can tell they aren't normal black shoes! As they are classed as protective gear they don't attract VAT so I think this pair was about £25. That said I suspect their sizes are limited so if you need female sizes you may have to look on their website and order something direct.

They have certainly been good in the snow - I started wearing them at work when I had to supervise some furniture being moved from one building to another on a day when we had frozen compacted snow on the ground onto which rain was falling, and despite it being extremely slippery I stayed upright!

Wellies are a cheap solution but are really designed for keeping your feet dry in deep water or mud - they are rarely comfortable to walk in and the taller ones often cut into your leg at the top. A decent pair of boots worn with two pairs of socks (take a spare pair when trying them on) is far better. (why two pairs of socks - because the socks rub on each other rather than rubbing on your feet!)

I heard on the news that golf shoes were a good option due to the spikes on the bottom!

I've been wearing my hiking boots. They're perfect, have good grip and are waterproof. All I have on underneath is a normal pair of sock and my toes are still nice and toastie. We all have them from Decathlon.

  • I have moon/snow boots, they are fab in this weather.

I got them in the summer sale of Seasalt in their discount shop. Worth looking out for in the summer, when they just want to get rid of stock.

Mine cost £20 and are fab. They are so warm, have so much grip and very comfy to walk in.

I first got a pair of moon boots 20 years ago as a teenager. They did me for 19 years, and as I said I invested in some new ones last year. So they last a long time!

I ordered these off Amazon - out of stock last time I checked unfortunately - but my goodness they work a treat, slip on over your shoes and cost £20

  • I bought some cheap walking-boots a couple of years ago and have been wearing them outdoors for the last couple of weeks. The best £15 I ever spent!

My Mum swears by socks over her shoes. Might look a little odd but better than falling over :)
