scan for viruses in Safe Mode and do a online virus scan using either: http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html or http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner.
sometimes viruses screw up your files and the only way you can recover them is to use file recovery software such as the ones Albertross (post#2) said... nothing else you can do.... i suspect you'v been infected with a "worm" which is like a self-replicating virus which keeps moving from file to file automaticaly... deadly stuff if you get infected... can reak havoc, as you experienced.

if i was you, i'l also purchase a better AV next time... something like Kaspersky, BitDefender or NOD32... you have to pay for it, but considering it prevents things like this or people stealing your documents and passwords for e-mail and online banking, its a worth-while investment. i used to have AVGfree, but then got a virus which AVG didnt remove, also done a online virus scan using Bitdefender online scanner: http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html and found loads of other viruses which AVG didnt find... decided to switch to Kaspersky... havent had a problem since

btw, avoid downloading or installing anything on your PC untill you've finished recovering as many files as you can!!!! essential! and recover the files to a USB device or another harddrive (one which you can afford to format to prevent them from getting corrupt. once youv recovered the files, transfer the files to your origional harddrive and formatthe USB stick or other harddrive

ok i have found a lot of the deleted files ... next problem .... most of them are apparently in poor condition .... i have recovered a couple of picture files but once they are recovered they dont show ... the same goes for video files that i have recovered ... they wont play WMP error message says something about not supportiing the codec used to compress it?

one program i have on free trial is 'diskinternals uneraser2.8' very simple to use and looks quite promising for recovering files ... only problem is that it will only recover 64kb and below whilst on free trial ... it costs $40 to buy full version.

anyone have any experiance of this program .. or can you reccomend a better one?

i have tried the 3 that albatross mentioned earlier .... pcinspector seems the best for locating files but this is the one i have tried to recover files with to no avail.

Seriously ive been at this since 10am this mornin ... im goin mental!!!!!!!!1

Hi again ... first of all .. i'll apologise for calling you albatross! I was so tired i didnt even bother to scroll up and check ur name i just guessed.

i Havent tried chkdisk yet ...... will go and try now ......... what i have noticed whilst using the pc inspecter program is that there are deleted files still in there from two to three years ago which still have a better prognosis for recovery than my recentely deleted stuff.

im no expert but i find this rather strange as only a couple of months ago i had used all but about 1GB of 60GB drive?

Anyway.... the thing is im maybe not using pcinspector properly but i'm certainly getting there very slowly ....... the diskinternals program has a very user friendly look about it for unexperienced punters like myself and i can very quickly find all my deleted files but when i use pc inspector to find the same files it becomes a struggle. I'll try my best anyway.

Thanks for all your help everyone ... (i'll get round to pressing thanks buttons later)
