Boots sell it, and I assume a local pharmacy would.
I've only ever seen it in pill form, or cream, which won't be suitable to put on his eye.

You could try crushing it maybe?

Thanks starlite, when my OH gets home il pop back down to the pharmacy again and see if they have it. I suppose i should count my blessings that i have such a decent pharmacist only a 2minute walk away. :) Oh and of course all you fab MSE'ers who are always full of advice and reassurance when im panicking! :)

A cold flannel will be just as good as a pack of frozen peas. I don't think I would like to hold a pack of frozen peas on my face either so can't blame him, little mite.

Don't worry about taking him to school. Thay won't send social services round if they don't think there's a need to. They know all about little boys and the scrapes they get into - they will have seen hundreds of black eyes in the past I'm sure.

If you're worried talk to his teacher about what happened and maybe ask her/him to keep a special eye on him until it gets better to show that you care.

I agree , no need to worry about S.S..but it's hard not to!
My friend had to be interviewed in the hospital by them when her little girl had fallen off the sofa and hit her head on the coffee table.
Not nice to made to feel guilty for an accident, but then I guess they have to cover their backs so as not to let genuine cases slip through the net.

Reminds me of soon after my little man was born.
I went out with friends for the first time. After not drinking for 11 months, I didn't know my limits and got very very drunk and trippied on a kerb, ending up with a massive black eye and bruised cheek, and deep grazes on my knees.
I felt really self conscious when I took my baby to the clinic, and felt I had to explain, before any 'sinister' conclusions were made..lol

You could try wetting a couple of flannels in cold water (wring out well) & put them in the freezer. Don't let them freeze solid, and just alternate between the two - as one gets too warm on his face, swop with the other. Don't keep it constantly iced, let him have half an hour or so with nothing on it.
It's a long time since I was at primary school, but IIRC, black eye = huge kudos!

Arnica tablets are so easy to give, there tiny, and my DS loves the taste of them  he hates taking things like paracetamol etc, hes 12 now and has always been the same. I'm not sure that you can crush them, as you have to put them straight on the tounge (sp) your not supposed to touch them.
DS was always covered in bruises when he was younger, still is now TBH, and hes spent more afternoons in casualty than the rest of the kids in my family put together, hes so accident prone  he gets worse during school holidays. Kids eh, who would have them????

If he didnt have the cut you could have tried witch-hazel, but unfortunately not possible unless you like inflicting pain!!!
years ago you could get something called 'tincture of arnica floris' which was a purple liquid version of the arnica tablets the OP has suggested. Absolutely brill on bruises. Haven't seen it for years and I have asked in a variety of pharmacies and got blank looks.
Thats the trouble with having a memory like an elephant!! Obviously not an 'in' thing. If anyone knows different I will be first in the queue to get some more.
Hope the battle scar gives him some kudos with the rest of the kids on Monday - they dont have to know how he acquired it.
