Anyone ordered one yet and if so how much did you pay?

Lots of feedback from users in the states complaining about 3g signal problems, does anybody from the UK have any feedback ?

Thanks

its £330 from google store directly for UK customers + import tax.

Coming out on Vodafone very shortly if you want it as part of a contract.

The phone is actually manufactured by HTC, and they have the rights to make their own identical version of the phone called HTC Bravo. It is physically the same phone and will be andriod based. They may add their own layer of HTC interface over it, like they did with the HTC Hero.

HTC Bravo will most likely come out on all networks, after the 'Nexus One' comes out on Vodafone. Other networks may get the phone afterwards however I don't see the point really with the HTC Bravo on the market also. It is like T-Mobile getting the G2 and the other networks getting the HTC Hero, same phone different model name. Not much point T-Mobile selling the G2 and HTC Hero together.

3G is a bit different in the states, they have their own network connectivity issues. Lilkihood is that you will not have the same issues as them however it is 100% dependant on your own location. Don't rely on other people's opinion of coverage unless they are your neighbour as they will be served by different telephone masts.

My personal view - I wouldn't pay out £330 for any andriod phone while the UK doesn't have Google Navigation or Google Voice. Both products, heavily demonstrated in the states and used part of their advertising campaign i.e. car navigation and cheap international calls over data... are NOT available in the UK yet.

also, if anyone is interested in the google phone, they may want to note that both Samsung and Sony are releasing their first andriod phone very shortly.

    Sony X10
    Samsung Galaxy

    Both being released this quarter.
  • The Samsung Galaxy was supposed to be out aaages ago, in mobile terms, mid-late last year. Its old tech, much slower than the Nexus and X10.

The SE X10 has sadly just been put back from Feb to March... then you've got to wait on the networks. I've waited on SE phones before and they always slip and slip and slip again. It does look good though. Thicker than the Nexus, bigger screen, same speed. I could take-or-leave the flashy slidy glowy SonyEricsson contact and mediaplayer apps.

Taking the above into account, I have a Nexus One. I've been charged £373.51 inc shipping and UK charger (optional, but good idea as I don't have a micro USB one, I would have been gutted!) but not including VAT. Expecting a DHL bill for that.
No customs duty on phones apparently.

I ordered on Wednesday, they shipped on Friday, I got it on Monday.

It DOES keep 'falling off' T-Mobile UK 3G when I'm at work. This could be because it's a weak area and the G1 was slightly better at keeping a signal (although only 1 bar), or it could be because of the same problems as in the US. US T-Mobile and HTC have acknowledged the problem so they are hopefully looking at a firmware update to fix it. When that comes out, I'll get it too.
At home it uses the wifi so I can't comment on strong signal areas.

Google Navigation will come once Google license the UK maps for that sort of thing (working on it apparently). Not sure if I care about Google Voice, you always get bundled so many free minutes when you get an unlimited internet SIM anyway...

No view on Vodafone pricing yet, but if you reckon on £35 for 18 months plus a charge for the handset (£100?) it works out about the same if you buy the handset upfront then get a £20 per month monthly SIM with unlimited internet. There may be cheaper options than that, not investigated yet.
Bravo will probably be priced about the same on contract - see current HD2 deals as a rough guide.

And buying it direct you get it NOW, not when Vodafone get around to it in 'spring'... and the price won't go down for a while after that.
  • mamoulian666 is yours a US model or is it a European model - more succinctly does it have multi-touch?
  • Right now there is no 'European model' - the only one you can get is from Google in the US.

    Re multitouch...
The hardware and OS *DOES* support it, it works in apps like 'Multi touch paint', 'PicSay' and 'Dolphin' browser. So whilst the official apps (gallery, maps, browser) don't use it right now they could do at any point.

*IF* Google enable multitouch in the UK version you can just flash the UK firmware. Or maybe Google will make app updates available on the market.
If they don't, there will more than likely be third-party modifications to allow it. e.g. CyanogenMod on the G1 adds multitouch to the standard browser.

    I was afriad of that.
Maybe the Galaxy will have 2.1 software?

I suspect you're spot on about firmware, I'd imagine that the 'European' model will be practically identical in hardware and just have different firmware.

It is very interesting what HTC are doing with their forthcoming phones. Thanks again.

All the phones including the existing andriod phones will eventually get 2.1. The only one that wont is the T-Mobile G1 (and perhaps the vodafone magic although speculating). Hero/g2, pulse and tatoo will get the updates.
