My car insurance has increased after a claim that wasn't my fault!

I could argue it both ways to be honest.
Pro - Everyone should share the financial burden of random accidents that could happen to anyone.
Con - I live in a lovely quiet area with lovely nice people where there are roses in every garden and I only drive to nice places, private barricaded car parks etc. Why should I subsidise people who live/work/drive in less nice areas? So even if they aren't at fault I don't want to subsidise their lifestyle choies.
Tricky one because I suspect we all want it both ways.0 -
Does this evidence take into account the type of accident?
It's just that many of us find it difficult to believe that if someone drives into your car, whilt it's stationary and you aren't even present, that your risk somehow magically increases.
Depends if the person tends to park badly/illegally or in a way that they are likely to get hit.

Didn't you drive into your own husband's parked car?
In that case his insurers could increase his premium because of the additional risk being married to you poses!

You could also argue that EVERYONE should pay for the completely random "I was asleeep in bed and someone drove into my stationary car" type of incident.
It could happen to anyone regardless of your driving ability.
Not if you garage your car. Your judgement in where you park your car surely has some bearing on risk of accident?0 -
Hi been reading this with interest. I had an accident which was my fault about just over a year ago (handbrake wasnt on fully and ran into our drive wall)! so I claimed but no problem as i had full NCB and protected. Then 2 months ago I was involved in an accident in a hit and run, car came round a bend in a lane so fast and went straight into me. Luckily wasnt hurt but he sped off. No witnesses. Managed to get his number and went to police but they were not interested as no witnesses. Now my insurance was brill got my car repaired very quickly. but now my renewal is due and its gone up by £200 from last year! Rang my insurers who said its because they are still fighting with the other insurers for my claim. It seems tho' the lad told the police it wasnt him who went into me, he has now written it down on his insurance statement saying he came round the corner, was surprised to see me (!) and went into me!! Anyway apparently his statement and drawing is the same as mine, so my insurers cant understand why his are not paying up and they said it could go to court. Anyway after all that rambling (sorry)! If I stay with my insurers and we win, my claims will stay protected and I MAY get some money back. Now I have looked around and putting in my ncb as it stands now I can get it for £75 cheaper with £60 cashback from a cashback site. I know staying with my present insurers will guarantee my full ncb if we win and I will get my 100 excess back whether I'm with them or not I'm still not sure what to do. Somehow feel disloyel leaving my current insurers even if i can get it cheaper elsewhere. Of course next year my ncb will still only be 4 years if I'm with someone else but when you not got a lot of cash hard to know what to do.

It happened to me on 5th Nov just as I had switched insurance company and 3 years before that at a different address on a different car, one reason I moved house to be on a quiet road with less than 20 vehicles come down our street
I got protected no claims but dare say I will be hit when I come to renewal time in Nov 2010.
I wouldn't mind it I always park properly and right up to kerb edge never had a accident since driving in 1982You could also argue that EVERYONE should pay for the completely random "I was asleeep in bed and someone drove into my stationary car" type of incident.

I don't think anyone would argue that if you amde a mistake you should be penalised, but it is hard, when you were completly faultless and perhaps not even there.0 -
Yes you are absolutely right !! well observed.Didn't you drive into your own husband's parked car?
In that case his insurers could increase his premium because of the additional risk being married to you poses!
He did not however claim off his own insurance, he claimed off the 3rd party insurance directly, given the likelihood of co-operation from the 3rd party - ahem
I don't believe he has been penalised and we have definitely given all the correct information.
So a possible conclusion from this small sample is that it's the act of claiming that gets you penalised and NOT the act of having the accident.0 -
Your judgement in where you park your car surely has some bearing on risk of accident?
Your absolutely right.
It depends on how the insurers look at the risk.
Basically I think they say you've had a claim so you are higher risk and do not take a look at the circumstances.
We might not like it when their pricng model affects us badly, but we are stuck with it, ebcause they can price insurance pretty much as they wish, providing they can show a link with risk.
BTW - I think other factors also matter. My insurance went up slightly but was still under £150, so your age, NCD, number of claims, postcode etc. all has an effect and also the type of accident (injuries are much higher cost). So it does not affect people equally. Young people may see big increase, but a slightly older person like me with max protected NCD will see minimal difference.0 -
Or unless your (sic) completely happy paying the price they're asking you to pay for the cover and service your (sic) getting.bigblackdog wrote: »i totally agree , you should never automatically re insure with the same company year on year without shopping around , unless your stupid that is
