Are you trying to argue that mental health issues haven't risen in the western world over the last few decades? Try reading the World Heath organistations latest reports.

How is stating a FACT not being objective ????

TBH there is no proof they have increased but more have been diagnosed the two are very different.

A few hundred years ago hardly any people were mentally ill (if any) but there were a lot of possessed, witches, fools etc etc.

The truth is mental illness is widely recognised in western countries and treated.

Outside the western world less people get treated or survive past youth for most mental illness. They also don't live as long sheltering them from some of the age related mental illnesses.

Don't confuse diagnosis/recognition as proof of an increase. Aids goes undiagnosed in Africa, if a person dies of an aids related illness but is not diagnosed it does not mean that person never had Aids.

and has the reporting of mental illness improved :)

Without figures I think you would find that difficult to prove one way or the another.

Its an interesting subject and one that should be higher up the government agenda.

I can't remember the country, but didn't an island somewhere ditch the target of GDP growth and target a "happiness index" to determine policy.

a friend of mine was brought up in one of the more 'modern' west African countries.
he had mental illness in his teens that was blamed on weakness etc and everything else apart from it being an illness.

he came to the UK in his late teens and was quickly diagnosed as having a mental illness. he was treated and from what he says feels much better for it.

just because the reported numbers of mental illness are higher doesn't mean that the problem wasn't there previously.

So am I. Will be a very interesting year I suspect.

Hi, yes if it actually happens I'm not so sure.
Do any of you go to other boards? I was reading the arms last night. There is some hilarious stuff posted over there. Sometimes on internet forums things can get a little stale. I have just left an internet forum that I was a member of for 5 years, just got bored in the end.

I tend to visit the general discussion area now as the topics are much wider and deeper in general

Well strictly speaking there are two things: has the incidence of mental illness risen or has the diagnosis of mental illness risen?

My feeling is that the latter is probably more important than the former.

My personal feeling is that it is being recognised more...I remember once having a discussion with my paternal grandmother about my PND. She was saying there was nothing like that in her day, I replied that it just wasn't recognised and that was why so many woman stuck their heads in the oven.

She went very quiet and on going over the conversation with my dad later, he let on that my nan had been one of those to stick her head in the oven when he was small....obviously she had been discovered before it went too far.

Saying that, I sometimes think they put too much down as depression when it could just be someone being a little low rather than properly depressed, especially if you have children, because of my history, I know that if I go up to talk about sleepless nights or something, the doctor will immediately be reaching for his prescription pad for anti Depressants when it could be something very simple.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

I love that an Off topic thread came back to the economy...even if with some poor temper.

Lemonjelly, I'm ok. my PM box here is full, so unable to receive them ATM, and I don't have, ATM, the time to resolve that, so apologies to those who are waiting word from me, or trying to contact me....and I haven't been on since....the 4th I think. I understand things have been less good tempered here? which saddens me. I'm hoping to catch up with PMs by the end of the week at the latest.

    Welcome back :j

Not noticed it being more bad tempered than any other times ;)
It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.

I suppose, a la the Chinese proverb, we should be extremely glad that we're not curently living in 'interesting times' - not huge amounts of economic or housing news to discuss, compared to when Lehman went down, say and we were all panicking - but then that must be a good thing, surely?

    How are you doing, sjay?
Yes I agree, probably best for the country/ economy that the board does not have much to talk about anymore... :D

.... but then I used to get a weird thrill reading very bearish threads at those times where it seemed anything was possible. Wasn't about any kind of personal gain though really (like the comments that bears are vultures trying to profit out of someone elses loss/ misery <irony?>) just hugely intriguing that we could be witnessing the catalysts to major reforms... maybe we still are, who knows :o... but then after a while the excitement is overtaken by the realisation of human cost, and it all dies down a bit.....

...and before you know it the board you loved reading but were too thick to post on has become a mockery through outrageous baiting and AE antics...

...and you then further add to its dumbing down by posting too much, treating it as home and using it to chat about chocolate, pea balls and alcoholism :A

Anyway- to clarify, thats 'you' as in 'me' before I offend anyone, and yes, I'm very well, thank you for asking, how are you?! :D
