do you want cheap as possible broadband? or willing to pay extra for better customer service.

General rule of thumb is the cheapest broadband isnt neccesarily the best!

What about requirements: Speed? Transfer limits? Maximum acceptable contract length?

firewall: ZoneAlarm (free version from Zone Labs) - [google zone alarm]
antivirus: AVG Free - [google avg free]

nothing paid out yet - but both are top quality products...

broadband - found zazizam to be reliable for my needs... but as other posters say... depends what is being looked for

Well he might want to look into freeola in the short term. They do an 8Mb service with a 3GB transfer limit for £9.99 with no connection fee (3 month contract). The price shoots up to £19.99 after 3 months though, so at that point it may make sense to migrate elsewhere. By that time he should have a much better idea of what kind of service he is likely to need.
