Hi,
5 years ago (almost to the day) we subscribed to Tiscali Dial up as we had no Broadband in our area. We were with Tiscali for about 6 months, when we then switched to a new Broadband service with another provider.
At this point we phoned Tiscali and cancelled the Dial up service.
Today we received a letter from a debt collection agency asking us for over £500 for arrears on a Tiscali account. When we told them that we would not pay that, the DCA immediately offered a lower price of £300 instead.
We spoke to Tiscali and they told us that the account was never cancelled and that arrears was built up and the account cancelled due to lack of response to letters that they sent us (but did not receive).
Can anybody advise us on what we should do here and what our legal rights are, since we do not have paperwork or emails dating back 5 years to either confirm or deny their accusations. I do, however know, that we are not the kind of people to ignore letters like that or not pay for a service that we use.
Any advice would be greatfully received!

Hi robbo
I have just experienced almost the very same thing ,a debt collection letter out of the blue for £524.00 so I contacted them to no avail told to speak to tiscali (did not even know they were talk talk) told by a rep no worries no monies owed ignore the letter from debt collectors so rang debt collection agency straight back told them what I had been told
10 days later another nice snotty threatning letter so got in touch after an hour and forty five mins on hold and then transfered told yep you owe us £501.00 we are so sorry we had a computer problem there has been no contact from them at all to state this no statements nothing at all when I asked about why if I had run up such a large bill nobody had contacted me or cut us off there was a long silence and no answer I am pursuing this as if they had a problem with their computer system its their tough luck!0 -
Hi,
Thanks for your response. I am sorry to hear that you are having the same problems as myself, but glad to know that I am not alone with this situation.
I have written tiscali a letter and will keep you posted on the outcome.
