Changing Broadband - Normal Sequence of Events

Am with Wanadoo at the moment, but if the rumoured Sky broadband doesn't do anything for me, then will probably change to another provider. If I do, whats the normal sequence of events and time scale to the changeover? Is there a time where you have to go without broadband whilst your current provider finishes and you wait for your new providers service to kick in??

First you let your existing broadband provider know you want to migrate to a new provider and obtain a MAC code, which you use when you apply to your new provider. In my experience it takes about 2 weeks to switch (during which time you should be able to continue to use your old broadband).

On a designated changeover day you simply switch login details (and any other necessary settings) to that of your new provider and (hopefully) connect to their service.

Well it depends what route you go down.

If your service provider gives you a migration code (its at their discretion remember, it isnt a right sadly & a lot of the time is down to if you've fulfilled your term with them) then that migration code lasts 30 days. Find your new provider & give them the code, transfer takes between 3-5 working days.

If your ISP arent prepared to give you the migration code then you'll have to get the broadband ceased off the line, that means physically get the broadband removed from your address at the exchange. This takes between 7-10 working days once BT Wholesale have recieved the order. Once the line is free of the marker (ie. broadband service) then you can apply to another company for your broadband who'll then take a further 5 working days to re-provide the broadband to your address.

Your providers must be a lot keener than mine ;). Last time I migrated it must have taken 3-5 working days for my new provider to accept my application.

not nessisarily - as they have to wait for BT Wholesale to get into gear... and then there is queuing to do - since only X amount could be processed a day on a first come first served basis.... mine took about a week

    Hi
1, Get your MAC, you then have 30days to find another isp.
    2. Find your new isp, migrate to them using your MAC Number.
    3. It usually takes a week to complete, your new isp usually keep you informed and tell you when they are taking over your line and supplying you with broadband.
    5. Once your isp have taken over your line, Phone and Cancel your old account, make sure you do this, because if not, your old isp can still bill you, even though they are no longer supplying you with broadband, you still have to cancel your account with them.

    Hope this helps

If you remove the marker on your line, do you pay increased set up costs to your new provider as a new broadband recipient, rather than providing a MAC code. I know it depends on the company, but some charge less set up costs for transfers. Hope this makes sense.
