I fancy one of these but do not want to pay a fortune for one.
I see that most used xbox's on ebay say RROD gone faulty - dont know anything about games consoles.
What should I go for and where?
Just want my daughter to be able to play some games and me too.

I wouldn't get a second hand XBOX 360 as the older ones tend to overheat easier causing RROD. If you do get second hand get it from somewhere like CEX where it'll have some sort of year warranty.
Also be wary of XBOX 360s on ebay as a load of them got banned recently after the COD release for being modified.
You can find them pretty cheap now brand new.0 -

so you may want ot consider buying new0 -

Have to say with the recent price drops on new xbox 360's and the problems with over heating causing RROD its financially better to buy a new one.
As mentioned already ebay has had a sudden influx in used 360's and from the beggining of november till the middle of december microsoft were banning consoles left right and center.
PS3's dont seem to be very cheap on ebay at the moment and again it does have the yellow light problem so for peace of mind i'd say your best to buy new again.
You can always try the high street retailers like game and game station for a slightly cheaper used console and they usually offer a warranty.Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0 -
RROD - red ring of death - not ideal.
Banned console- not ideal
New console - usually comes with some games / bundle to "start you off"
It would have to be very cheap for me to buy an xbox on fleabay...0 -
I know I'll probably get jumped on for saying this, but is your daughter into violent war type games, as it seems to me that these are the main type you can get for the xbox? Or is it that you want the console and are trying to use buying it for your daughter as a justification?
Having said that, Xboxes are the cheapest of the current consoles around at the moment, but if you are on a budget, remember that the expense doesn't end with buying the console. The games and extra controllers all cost a bit as well.
But I agree with others. I'd rather go without than risk an ebay console purchase.0 -

Nothing worng with that, I had to buy my son an elite as he really really wanted one.....he is only 18 months old lol:beer::beer:
Don't forget the xbox live membership if you want to play online.Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0 -
Choosing between a 360 and PS3 is difficult.
Generally the PS3 is considered to be the technically better and more reliable console BUT the 360 has the better games and online experience.
As people above have said, the newer models have had all the bugs ironed out so look at getting a new one with a warranty (3 years now on the 360)
Bear in mind that the base 360 model (the Arcade) doesn't come with a built in hard drive or headset (for online gaming) and neither the Arcade or Elite models of the 360 come with built in wireless networking. If you want to play online and don't have a handy network point or cable near your TV, you need the wireless module and that's an extra £50. You can just get a third party wireless "bridge" and that will be cheaper but probably more messy to setup.
If you want to play online, you ideally need a hard drive and to be able to download games, music, video's, you certainly do. Unfortunately, you can only buy Microsoft drives and a 120GB one will set you back about £60. The PS3 comes with wireless and a hard drive included (but doesn't include a headset). The PS3 is also a Blu-ray player whereas the 360 only plays DVD's.
Personally, I would look at the games you want to play and what your / your daughters friends play on. Choose the console that has the best selection of games you want but remember if you want to play on line, you have to have the same console as who you want to play online with.0 -
My son is happy with the PS3 I bought on eBay.
For items like this, I buy locally and see it working before I pay for it.0 -
ps3, much better allround, DO NOT buy a 2nd hand x-box, if it has been banned you wont know until you try it, then its too late, plus you have to pay to use it online, you dont with ps30
