The absolute safest most precautionary advice I can think of for you....
Jack the car up,
Get your wheel wrench ready
Get some grease (copper grease is the stuff) but any motor grease or old engine oil will do. at the extreme end of "making do" you could use vaseline....
Undo one wheel stud/nut completly without touching the rest, remove it from the car examine the thread (if it is not a nut) put whatever grease you are using onto the thread of the stud.
Refit the stud into the hole and "hand tighten"
Remove the next wheel stud/nut & repeat the above steps.
When you have removed them all and refitted them all, you will know that none of them have been any problem to you and you can now safely remove all of them all at once, and change the wheel.
If the wheel is stubborn to come off, kick it a few times at different points around it , until it becomes loose.
If you encounter a problem with ANY of your studs/nuts don't panic, just make sure the others are all tightened and drive slowly to a garage you will be fine.
If the wheel does not budge and will not come off don't worry, just refit all the studs and drive to a garage.

Even when she is stranded 200 miles away with work?
I agree that changing a tyre isn't a neccesity. But it's bloody useful sometimes! And I agree that even if the driver can't change the tyre, they should at least know how to change the tyre.
Well there's always the RAC for those situations.
The thing is there are many other things that could go wrong with your car. I know how to do some pretty complicated repairs on a car but that wont help me if a fault develops while I'm out as more then likely I wouldn't have the means to do the repair until I got home. These days we have a pretty good network of breakdown rescue companies so why not use them if you need to - even if its just to change a tyre.
At the end of the day, if you need to call for assistance for some reason it matters not if you know what the problem is - someone is still going to have to come and help you.0 -
Sorry but common sense does play a major factor in most tasks in life..
To clarify - not everyone posses this presumed all pervasive 'common sense' even before arriving at, and then considering, the practical ability to undertake the task. Maybe you have the fortune to never encounter these people (whispers - they are EVERYWHERE.. run away, run away!)
Good gravy - 'tis exactly why your '99% of people..' is meaningless made-up banana banter.
But do tell - how did dear mamma get on? you did ask? - hope she's not associating with that pernicious 1% of rusty nut reprobates...0
