How do I drop dial up phone line and combine with the ordinary phone line?

I only have an old computer - Mesh and have 2 lines with Virgin. One for dial up and one for phone calls.
I want to drop the computer line and put both numbers on to the phone line as Virgin charge £11 monthly for each line and I don't use the computer often

I realise I have to get the dial up line cancelled. But how do I (on the computer) actually drop the dial up line and use the phone line number only for both?

Can someone explain in simple terms please. Thanks.

You cant combine two phone numbers onto the one line &,wilth dial up as you know, you cant use the phone & internet at the same time.
With a cable phone line as well, you cant use adsl broadband (Sky/O2/BT,ect) as the phone network used by Virgin is different than BT ect.
As for changing the dial up phone number,I think you'll need to contact your provider to do it.
  • Wouldn't you have to plug the network cable into the other phone line? Or if you only have one plug for both lines, maybe it will find the right line and work anyway?

Can you explain if you simply want to continue with dial up on a single line (in which case you can't use the phone while online), or if you want to drop one line and switch to broadband?
In the former case you simply transfer your dial up service onto the line you want to keep, and cease your service on the second line.
But you could get broadband for less than the £11 you are currently throwing away on a second line.

PS: please clarify if the two lines are Virgin Media cable, or Virgin National (ADSL)?

BT used to offer two incomming numbers on the same line (tried it once for a free trial a few years back) where you got different ring tones to identify which number was which. However, did not work well with me as the cordless phones did their best to make both ring tones sound the same. Not sure if still available but may solve problem if Virgin offer similar. It was marketed by BT so that your teenage children could have their own incomming number and would answer their own calls....!!!

It's Virgin Media cable. We have Tv L, phone and extra dial up line for the computer with them. I pay Line rental each line £11.50 (So £11.50 x 2.) Plus extra for the Tv and calls on top.

I know I can't use computer and phone together if I drop the 2nd line but don't mind about that.

I'm told that I can't have broadband because this computer is so old... over 12 years and doesn't have the points for broadband.

I do want to get a new computer soon (that's another story and need some advice about that). and Virgin have an offer on at the moment free installation of broadband and 2 months free .So thinking of that but have to get the computer first.

I can't just plug the computer line into the phone socket as the socket will only take the one line. I have seperate sockets for them.

When computer comes on when I connect there is a grey box comes up saying it's connecting and has a small box 'settings' within. I think I have to change the phone number(for the dial up line) within that and cancel it with Virgin too.
As you can tell I'm no computer whiz and it's trial and error with me. Mostly error!!!

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks. M.

What operating system are you using? XP, W2000, W98?
You can have broadband if you have a USB port or preferably a network (ethernet) port, do you have any of these?
The OS may be the limiting factor though.
To feed both phone and PC's modem into one socket just use a phone splitter/doubler, (a couple of pounds at any DIY store or phone shop) this will enable you to drop one line and still use your dial up.
