Early Upgrade from T-mobile

Offered early upgrade by phone last night but only if I divulged my account password (for data protection?????). Caller knew my contract was ending and was calling from t-mobile retentions team, but I only found this out later by googling the number and calling t-mobile customer services, at the time it all seemed a bit iffy. Customer services advised me not to divulge any personal info (which I hadn't) so why are their marketing people requesting it in the first place?
Didn't proceed with the upgrade as the caller said she needed my password to continue, so said, no ta, bye bye.
Has anyone else upgraded via this method, and if so did you get a good deal?

I checked with t-mobile customer services and they said the call came from one of their marketing companies. This made me even more confused because they said definately don't give out any personal details. My upgrade is not due till next month at the earliest anyway, so that made me suspicious right away!0
