why does my internet cut off?

Options
ok just swapped over internet services providers, now im with talktalk. everything is going fine, however i notice when i leave my pc and go do something when i return the internet has cut off. If im on my pc and doing something like surfing the net i can be on for a hour or 2 and its o, but as soon as i move away and leave it for 5 minutes or so it seems to disconnect.

not sure what the prob is here.

have talktalk got something going that if you go 'idle' it cuts off??

at the moment its not a problem as this ony happens when im away from the pc.

I dont fancy calling talktalk to ask about this as last time i was on hold for well over 1 hour just to tell them my address details.

    Are you on dial-up?

Are you on a USB broadband modem and if so, I assume your PC goes to sleep?

Power saving settings might be set to shut down bits of the PC after 5 minutes set it to High Performance mode and see what happens. Laptop I used to have would always shut down the ethernet when removed from power as it assumed if you are on battery then you won't need a tethered ethernet connection. That was a Dell.

Why are you using a USB modem, they went out with the ark. Didn't Talk talk supply you with a Wireless router when you signed up, and if not why not?
A Router is 'On' all the time.

Wow a sagem 800 modem....how long have you had that? Get talktalk to give you a router. All Operating Systems supported except for Vista and Windows 7 as it's so old. The user guide is dated November 2002.

TalkTalk's current ad includes a free wireless router. I'm assuming OP does know that wireless routers can be used with with an Ethernet (wired) connection.

Indeed, the uninitiated often assume that to be the case.

i got a D-link router with my talktalk set up but i se the sagem because its easy for me thats all really. i tried to set up a router for a friend and had nothing but problems with the set up. still cant get the thing to work.

i like the sagem as its easy to work, just plug it into the usb and telephone and away i go.

ive been told there is no difference in preformance wit my sagem than using a router so ill stay with it untl otherwise.

im only on a 2 meg connection speed (but getting 3) so im sure im seeing nothing better in the type of iconnection im using, or am i wrong.

I have an olde USB modem like that, what I tend to do is setup with the USB modem and check its working ok, then put it in a box somewhere as a 'proven spare' and use my main router so I know I have a configured, tested backup modem if evey my router or wireless starts playing up :)
