  • I imagine that downloading these files is taking for ever and ever Stephanie perhaps trying Tools/Account Options/ then Server Settings then tick Fetch Headers only will speed things up a little, just an idea

    Hello again.

Wasn't able to get online til now so apologies for not replying to the....er...replies.

Lil306; have just gone to yahoo a/c and deleted the 1 spam mail, been there weeks, and the 3 mails in the trash but no change am afraid. Soon as I relaunch the NEW TB3 a/c [following JasX advice y/day] it still shows the same RETR alert.

More hassle is the TB3 is now taking forever to yet again, index 775 messages. This indexing seems a real unnecessary pain for me as I have no problem finding old mails, if I ever need to [mostly NEVER] and it creates a big fat memory gobbling folder; almost duplicating the mail storage via the SQLITE stuff [this is what I have gathered from recent websearches re TB3 over last few days....not that I really understand it] As such I just close TB3 soon as have checked the situation has not altered.

So might be just yahoo/TB3 conflict then? Wonder why I cannot see more reporting online; must be many who share the same set-up as me.

Not sure what the HEADER only advice means. Am all for attempts at quicker d/loading; an inevitable procedure I will have to endure whether I go back to old profile and/or create a 3rd one. Does HEADER only mean you don't get the full mail? Presume that's ok if JasX advice re deleting my old profile [after backup] means all my precious 1000s of sent/received TB mails are at least safely stored on my external.

Will try the HEADER only route.

OH....and hope have not started some technical warfare between my two most helpful posters. Or is that how it always plays with fellas trying to sort out solutions. Thanks to all the helpful advisors anyway.
  • Just tried the HEADER ONLY option..........then see the old familiar unwelcome alert.

"The RETR command did not succeed. Error retrieving a message. Mail server pop.mail.yahoo.com responded: problem retrieving message."

Good job no one mails me much and still have yahoo online to use.
  • Do you get a code with the retr failure ?

  • Hello Debi....

No have never seen any code; just tried again and get pop up alert box stating only:

"The RETR command did not succeed. Error retrieving a message. Mail server pop.mail.yahoo.com responded: problem retrieving message."

Unless there is somewhere else I can find a "code"?

    Thanks
  • Look at Tools/Error Console the may be something there ?

Appreciate you trying to help though.

The issue is to do with Thunderbird / Yahoo retrieval settings. It's possibly the way in which Thunderbird retrieves it.

I've tried it with an older version of Thunderbird and it's same issue, and I've also tried with another mail program. The problems are specific to TB / Yahoo so it's most likely a problem with Thunderbirds design.

Would help if I knew more how the program works but :) as for the error console that shows nothing. Headers only is basically the subject line of the file

  • Thanks for reply Lil306

Do you mean that all yahoo/tb users would have the same problem?

Have had TB3 since before Xmas and seemed to work ok til last Sunday so something must have changed on that day, starting with TB3 downloading ALL my previous read mails from yahoo.

Or am I misunderstanding what you state?

As I have posted, though, can still access my few mails via yahoo itself and have no other online a/cs associated with TB so not really a major problem; I suppose. My PC crashing all the time seems a greater challenge so maybe should post separately about that.

    Thanks again.

I suspect all Yahoo / TB users have the same problems at some stage because of the numerous posts on the Mozilla forums.

The fault can lie with Yahoo or T.Bird to be honest. Yahoo because quite frankly they're rubbish IMO anyway, and I'd hardly say their servers / support are the best. T.Bird because I've used it for a while so I know how stupid the program is at times with the way it works.

It could be a recent change which Yahoo has implemented (I know they have a web interface now) and I'm wondering if it stuffed it up somehow. I'm trying to find a way to restore an old interface to test with.
