She is of course entitled to statutory paid holiday pro rata 28 days per year.

Also, given the lack of a written contract, she could reasonably assume that the firm was only closed for the Christmas Bank Holidays and not for a two week shutdown.

Given the ridiculous petty attitude the company are displaying, plus the fact there seems no chance of any useful reference she may as well string them along!

That is not really right or moral is it though? Also the OP is not showing most respectable behaviour, don't blame them for keeping something back.

She should have acted as an adult, come in and tell them.

Also could come back and kick her in the bum.

Since November? I read September, my mistake.
Even if there was contract that would still be probationary period and in probationary period either party can cease the employement without notice.

So if the OP already got paid till the end of Dec but actually didn't work then she certainly owes them the money.
Yes, I would say OP has done herself no favour by not returning after Christmas and saving walking out for the first tantrum from the employer. I would say employee is entitled to pay up to last day of attendance plus accrued leave.

I would agree that the contract would be probationary by default and from what was said - but equally in asking OP to stay on, it is arguable that it had passed from probationary.

Yes, you are right of course (in a way). My comment was slightly toung in cheek.

The problem is that two wrongs never make a right. Like all posts here, we only get one side of the story.

It may have been hell working there to the point that any reasonable person may be forgiven for walking out.

Alternatively it was a decent job and the OP is to blame.

    Who knows......
