Nothing, tell them to take it away.
THE VENDOR KEPT THE HEATING RUNNING AS A KIND THOUGHT TO KEEP THE HOUSE WARM & WE COMPENSATED HIM ABOUT £30 FOR THIS.
We did that once & ran out of fuel shortly after at Christmas time as the gauge was faulty.

They should be able to provide a bill showing you how much they paid for the last delivery surely?
It's up to you how hard-nosed you want to be about paying for it.0 -
not a penny, they can take it with them.0

I certainly wouldn't advise telling the vendors to take the oil with them! If you p!ss them off, they could consider taking every single light-switch and lightbulb with them, never mind putting prawns behind the skirting-boards.
Ask to see the last bill so you know what the price is per litre, come to an agreement with how much you both think is in the tank and then pay them for it. The only caveat is satisfying yourselves that the way it is measured is accurate.0 -
my initial thought was tell them to jump, but BandT is right, who knows what they might do, perhaps you could get them to fill the tank then you know how much is in it. Pay them full price for the top up and negotiate a deal on the oil already there, after all it is of no use to them.0

Thanks
This is interesting. i have just found out IT WILL COST THEM to have the fuel removed
We will have a look on Sat (next viewing) to assess if them removing the oil themselves (i.e. not getting the oil company in) is viable, and if there is a reasonably accurate way of estimating the quantity. Apparently removing oil from the new tanks is (usefully) quite hard
If I know that it can't be easily removed, and it cost them to have it removed, I will bide my time and ask them to remove the oil at my latest convinience. If they push the point, I wil offer them £0.30 a litre (under the price) knowing it will cost them to remove it0 -
I'm staggered and shocked by the suggestions here.
Do what is 'right'. Pay for the oil that you will be benefitting from and using.
If, as suggested, you "tell them to take it away", you'll only have to replace it!
Ask for a copy of their last bill, see what they paid per litre, agree how much is left in the tank and pay for your heating fuel like everyone else!
Why do people these days think it's OK to get something for nothing, at someone else's expense??
That's the least of your problems, they might leave it 'leaking' into the garden, or top it up with water or......If you p!ss them off, they could consider taking every single light-switch and lightbulb with them, never mind putting prawns behind the skirting-boards.0 -

Totally agree. If the heating was gas or electric you wouldn't expect the previous owners to pay your next months' bills.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. True - but that's not a reason not to try!
My tank has a sight glass. I can tell that at present the tank is about a third full. That's about 800 litres (it's a big tank), though if I was selling the house I'd give the buyer the benefit of the doubt about the exact figure.
ps - it'd also be a real pain moving into a new house to find an empty tank, esp in this weather!
Never had an oil boiler before? Know who to call? Know how long it takes? Got an account? Got time to shop around? No, you've got 101 other things to do in your new house!0
