May I suggest that you try to find a part-time member of staff. This is what I used to do before online shopping became an every-week occurrence. I used to find the part-time students were the best... since they have no knowledge of customer service or store policy

People can be part time for a million reasons and it does not automatically mean they arent interested in either the profitability of the company OR the service received by the end consumer.
I work part time for Somerfield, but not because I'm a student or because I'm lazy (okay maybe a little bit lazy ;)), I work PT because I dont *have* to work (and who wants to work when they dont have to?). I used to be a full time store manager but according to your logic because I'm now only PT, I must have "no knowledge of customer service or store policy". What twaddle! The two are not mutually exclusive. Heck, I've known some students who could knock the pants off full time staff with their customer service/knowledge of store policy.
Generalisations are a bad, bad, bad thing. Let this be a lesson to you :D

Sounds like very bad timming on my part but I've recently started 'shopping' with vouchers where i haven't bought the product.
I think stores are right to refuse the coupon unless you've bought the product as it does say very clearly on the coupon that's what will happen...but everyeone else was doing it and i am a sheep!

Both times i've used asda self scan and spent over £10, using max £3 vouchers and feel very daring! i'm to much of a coward to offer the vouchers to an actuall person though, unless i've bought the item.

it's sounding like i'm getting brave just as it's being banned :(

The policy at ASDA is 10% of your shopping. However:
    1) It is only a guideline and any checkout operator / supervisor can refuse to give it.
    2) Staff are poorly trained and many don't know about this until they've been there a while.

After a few 'dodgy' trips to Asda i had my most successful trip ever today. I chose a young girl (student i thought) chatted to her plesantly and sympathised that she had to work all day. I then said sheepishly that i had a lot of coupons and could she use whatever possible for me. She took all of them and I saved £18.24 on a shop of £136.15. Ironically the bulk of these were coupons Adsa issued in its own magazine.
The moral is, keep on trying!!

I have just been into Asda and I thought I would try using a couple of low value coupons at the tills, just to test the waters. So, I picked a young male and put through £12.57 worth of shopping. I gave him 3 coupons, 50p, 30p and 20p, so they totaled £1. None of them were Asda own, all manufacturers and all well in date.

He looked at them, then looked at my till receipt to see what I had purchased. He called a supervisor. The woman came and said, you didn't buy these items so you can't use the coupons. This was a different store from the one I had self scan issues with. Incidentally, I popped into that Asda and handed the coupons in at customer services, the ones that the machine wouldn't take. The woman said they had issues with that machine jamming when anyone puts a coupon in so in future, use another machine or hand them to the supervisor.

Personally, I would have complained if annybody spoke to me like that. Irregardless of weather you were entitled to them or not there is no need for rudeness and I would have been fuming.

I have been busy today using up my last 14 '£1.49 off House Beautiful' coupons that I got in last week's Real People mag, so have only just seen this thread!

I agree with pink-phantom, I would consider this rude and worth an email to Asda customer services! Luckily I have not (yet) encountered such rudeness but I expect it will happen one day as I always shop armed with a wedge of coupons. By the way, not book tokens...! :o

Earlier this week Welsh Dragon, a regular coupon poster, was subjected to rudeness at Tesco in the same vein (see the Newspaper Summary for last Wednesday 28th June, on this board).

I think that if the large Supermarkets have an established policy for coupon acceptance without buying the product, how can they condone a member of staff's rudeness to a customer politely asking for coupon-use within the policy?! I expect an email of complaint would obtain an apology at least!

Toto, just want to say I feel sorry for you because I only started using coupons this year and have had nothing like the trouble you have had!

The worst I have found is a local Tesco who tell me that they 'only accept one coupon per shop now because Tesco cannot get the money back on coupons any more'. I laughed and told the supervisor I wouldn't believe that if I were you, seeing as Tesco Head Office has a Coupon Redemption team happily redeeming coupons every day. However, there are a couple of sa's in that same branch that still accept 3 coupons per shop, no problem, and one of those let 4 thru' for me today as they had to be used today! I asked him if it would be OK and he said yes of course and no-one checks...!

Better luck next branch! In my area, I only go to one Asda which takes most coupons, and avoid the one that only accepts one coupon. It's daft really! I am sure you might find a friendly shop in the end!

I too went shopping with a few mag coupons which finished today - but was rejected at Tesco ( had to actually buy the mag) and Asda would only accept up to 10%, and I mean they actually calculated down to the penny what value of coupons they would accept.....so couldn't use my coupons there !

In ASDA today I got all my mag coupons from the Mail and Times rejected, also the ASDA's own whisky £2 one (though she took the 30p crisps one).

However, ASDA had no salad left (shelves cleared due to power cut caused by lightning storms we had this morning) so had to pop to Tesco. I asked if I could use one mag voucher (an Esquire 1.99 one) against my £4 of salad and the checkout chap agreed. However, I then offered a £10 note to pay (I had nothing smaller) and he couldn't change it. I then said I could pay most of the remainder with another voucher and he was glad to accept to solve his change shortage. So I got £4 of salad for 26p!! Result!!!! Was very chuffed. And got to use two of my soon-to-be-out-of-date mag vouchers. I have to thank you again, Welshy - without your posts, I would not have realised about this coupon lark.

Having a good run at paying with coupons at the moment, so much so that my coupon stash is getting a bit low.....:o

Strange thing today, I had to take a PS2 game back to Tesco (I bought it last week but it won't load - subsequently found it £10 cheaper elsewhere anyway!). I was a bit concerned as my receipt showed I had got a £40 bill down to £27 with coupons (it's a good branch for generally scanning anything - even if I say, can you scan some coupons for me, what's the limit?).

Anyhoo, the refund was for nearly £30 so I thought I may have to accept a giftcard or exchange, otherwise I have effectively got cash for my coupons...............but no problems, refund done! No comment about the coupon-part of the receipt being so longggggggggggg.

I know the first post was about Asda but haven't been there recently, too busy trying to build up enough Tesco Clubcard points to pay for our first family holiday abroad next year...
