4 hours can be normal depending on drive size and programs running etc

    Download HostsXpert
    http://download.softpedia.com/dl/a688cad746f64494e3ba8aee103f97e4/4b3ceb67/100027041/software/system/HostsXpert.zip
and then follow the below steps.

    * Unzip HostsXpert.zip
    * It will create a folder named HostsXpert in whatever folder you extract it to.
    * Run HostsXpert.exe by double clicking on it.
    * click the Make Writeable? button.
    * click Restore Microsoft's Hosts File and then click OK.
    * Click the X to exit the program

ill go through the hijack list laters. Just about to have tea now

    You can uninstall/remove these ~
    Adobe PDF Conversion Toolbar Helper
    TrueImageMonitor.exe
    Windows Sidebar
Webroot\Washer (Much safer to use CCLEANER instead)
    Roxio\BackOnTrack\Disaster Recovery

You can stop this service from running ~
    Nero 7\Nero BackItUp\NBService.exe
    and all the ROXIO ones

Go into TUNEUP and stop it automatically running

I have came across a browser worm like this recentlly. Get Ad-aware and do a scan on your main drive.

Finally after a lot of scans the problem was a google tracking cookie called double click i used adaware to remove it and went on the google opt out site and all seems well, i dont know if its coincidence but even firefox seems to be a bit more responsive and faster. Thank you for everyone who took the time to reply it has been very helpful and if i have more problems at least now i know where to come.

You might want to try SPYBOTS 'immunise' feature to block things like that

Personally I use NOSCRIPT as well (Makes browsing 'bomb proof', but not 'idiot' proof)
